(CBS News) A Las Vegas police officer is in hot water after being caught on tape beating a videographer outside of his home in March.
A police department review found that Officer Derek Colling violated police policies when he used "excessive force" on Mitchell Crooks, reports the Las Vegas Review Journal.
According to the newspaper, the incident occurred on the night of March 20, when the 36-year-old Crooks was in his driveway videotaping police as they investigated a burglary report across the street. Crooks said that when he refused to stop filming, Colling arrested and beat him, with much of the altercation recorded by the camera.

I really hate cops like these.
I've said it before and I'll say it again....gangsters with badges.
Looks to me that the guy lied to him about where he lived. He should have done what was asked of him. I think he got what he deserved.
"do you live here?"
"nope."
then hes a suspect. hes in an area that he doesnt belong. then he tried to back-track and say he did live there. now hes lying. he got arrested. he resisted and got hurt. dont be a dumbass and things will be peaceful.
they restrained a possible intruder. after he was restrained (from the resisting), they stopped. he wasnt a very good actor either.
To the moron of anon 12:24 pm..
Wither your trespassing or not, and the guy wasn't, whether he said this is or is not my house the cops have no right to make you turn of your camera period... also they have no right to beat you, put you in hand cuffs and to what the officers might have thought was trespassing...
If you would read and watch the news, you will clear see that everyone is in their right to video tape in the public right of way...
You don't use excessive force on a so called possible trespassing infringement PERIOD!!! Seems to me your a cop or was at one point or have on i the family so of course you will back them...
because crooked cops cover for crooked cops period... And to point out there are more crooked cops than there are crooked politicians...
im thinking 1248pm watches too many tv shows...
12:24; 12:35 & 12:45 - I assume you pukes are cops ...and probably not good ones (or maybe just typical ones). Do you think they would have just let him continue filming if he HAD said it was his home? I bet not! Also, he posed no physical threat to them, so when he did say it WAS his home, why didn't they just ask him for ID to find out. Because they had already decided they were going to teach him a lesson! They certainly wasted no time in using brute force when they said, "Frog" and he didn't jump. Yet again, a little common sense (on the part either side) could have averted this whole ugly episode, saved the cop his job and the taxpayers probably thousands of dollars defending this cop and the municipality he works in when they are all sued and probably lose.
Should the "perp" have lied about whether or not it was his home. Of course not! Should this lie have resulted in his arrest and brutalization at the hands of these thugs? Again, of course not.
goggle forbes...erik kain homeless man beaten to death by 5 cops
notice how they kept threatening him with pain/world of hurt, ect
We do not post links in comments. You are welcome to send them via e-mail but there are way too many viruses out there and we will not let them up.
Just another punk trying to get on you-tube. They should have stomped his camera and his head.
Somebody needs to stomp on the a--hole cop not the bystander! Everyone of the comments supporting this type of behavior by the cops have to be a--hole cops themselves!
The cop should be tried in a court of law for criminal misuse of authority and when found guilty tied to a stake and beaten with a horse whip!
Wow.......there is new case law wherein the judge ruled that people can videotape police. This officer was wrong. They do not get to make up the law as they go.
A) If the property isn't posted against trespassing; or
B) the person filming hasn't been ordered to leave by the owner or his agent; or
C) the person isn't hunting without written permission;
There is no trespassing (in Maryland).
This officer was way out of line and his authority has gone to his head. It would be in the best interest of the Law Enforcement Agency AND the public in general, if this officer was fired.....immediately. No internal necessary as this is a performance issue that is extremely pervasive. LEOBOR doesn't apply. The agency has an obligation to protect society from further abuse by this idiot. I retired from Law Enforcement many years ago and even in the city, with this on tape it could not be covered up. Every Law enforcement officer on here should have recognized the first mistake when he initially ordered the guy to stop taping. This taping in no way obstructed or hindered his investigation. If he was too close to the crime scene then he should hve ordered him to step back to an area that was no longer in the crime scene....not stop taping. This officer is a fool and he gives a black eye to a very noble, honorable profession.
This citizen will get paid.
And 2:22 you are the punk. Your ass wouldn't have lasted five minutes in our station. We were on a protect and serve mission not seek and destroy.
3:54 he should be taken to Jessup and thrown into gen pop with a badge on.
Not all cops are like this. He obviously should be held accountable for his actions. Like in every profession, it only takes a few to ruin the whole. The reason it happens to cops more often is because of the stress of the job, including the long hours, criminals of all kinds, threats, etc. I am not defending this person in particular, just things to keep in mind next time a cop is rude to you. They probably are working on very little sleep. And yes, someone very close to me is an officer. But he is the polar opposite of the guy on the video.
does anyone else get the feeling that people are tired of the government being heavy handed and violating thier civil rights?
