It is true. Saving for a lifetime and finding out that you will never be able to retire.

Happened to us. We had everything diversified, too. After an illness and a job loss, one more illness and we're all done.

Did everything we were supposed to do and it didn't matter at all.

This is why it is so important to live basic and learn to enjoy the simple things in life. NOW. Don't bust your hump your whole life and plan on enjoying your golden years. Take interim sabaticals and get revived, learn new things, stop and smell the flowers while you can.

Learn to live a nonmonetary life as much as you can. That way, the economic downturns will have little effect on you.
