On Site Deputy Removed From Salisbury Middle School

Mr. Albero,

I often read sbynews with interest.

There is an issue that may be of interest to your blog.  At the last minute, the Board of Ed. Informed the Principal of SMS that they would be removing the on-site deputy for at least the Fall of 2011 in spite of the concerns of both her and Mike Lewis.  There has been no communication with parents (an ongoing issue with the BOE administrative staff) and so to facilitate communication and information sharing as well as provide a forum to urge a resolution that protects children and staff, a group formed a Facebook page.  The location is safesms@groups.facebook.com.  In addition, the SMS PTA provided the opportunity for parents to gather information and sign a petition on Back to School night.   The number of parents highly concerned about this issue is remarkable.

The groups purpose is not only to provide an open forum but to urge the BOE to make choices in tough budget times that impact Board level administrative staff instead of directly impacting students and staff at Wicomico County schools.  There are also serious questions raised in the mind of many parents, why this school given its demographic and location, is this politically motivated by Dr. Fredericksen and why has there been no communication to key stakeholders – parents and surrounding community?

the school setting is too dangerous to be putting officers in.

These deputies are an absolute necessity in ALL schools! My question is, why can't the city police department help with some of the "in the city limits" schools? It seems like it would certainly help the sheriff's department and help disperse some of the responsibility?

this is 12:18

please re-read my post and try to comprehend it

i said cops SHOULD NOT be needed in schools

and they shouldn't
kids make trouble, kick em out.

parents should practice parenting

would you have gotten away with many of the things kids get away with today?

do we even have reform schools anymore? if not, lets bring them back and send those there that need them.

I am an advocate for the police presence in schools not only for the students but for the TEACHERS. I can't tell you how many times I've seen teachers put in a difficult situation with a violent student - they can't defend themselves without fear of losing their job!

You took the bible out of the schools and this is what you get. Thanks liberals!

Unless conditions have significantly changed at Salisbury Middle, that is the LAST school that should without police presence.

And 12:36, you're right. I went to Wi-Hi in the late '50's, and we didn't have them. Instead, we had Dorothy Graham. How many of you remember her? And at Wi Junior (then), we had Helen Wooten. Times, they have changed!

Do the other middle and high schools all have deputies? I think they do. Probably Mardela has the least use for one if cuts have to take place, but one Board member would never allow that to happen. Better Salisbury Middle go without one instead. Board members should make common sense decisions, not just always protect the school their children attend.

Here's some ideas. STOP coddling every little punk that has no interest in learning. Goes to school to pick on other kids, disrupt the classroom (he thinks he's funny), start fights, steal, threaten teachers, check up his other gang-bangers, compare tattoos, and sell drugs. The GOOD kids can't learn because the teachers spend 15-30minutes of EVERY class telling kids to sit down, stop talking, stop throwing things, wake up, stop cursing and making lewd comments to the girl next to them, etc. Start teaching to the kids who WANT to learn instead of kissing the aces of the dolts, the punks, the criminals, and the kids who WANT to be ex-cons and gang bangers. And QUIT allowing parents to have their kids get paid for (from the Social Security Fund!!!) being "disabled" because they can't control "their anger" and beat other kids up every day. Quit acting like, and telling us, that all kids just need love and attention. Get THAT at home. Some of the kids are outright DANGEROUS and should not be allowed to freely mingle with normal kids. get rid of the "let's all feel good about ourselves" crap they teach new teachers and start teaching. Math. Science. Civics. Responsibility. And start civil proceedings against parents who refuse to keep their kids in line. How many principals have heard the parent of knife-wielding Johnny say "ok, so he stabbed Sarah. I got dat. BUT, did YOU put your hands on him? 'cause I be suing yo ace for THAT". What about Sarah? They "ain't be worried 'bout dat". All you teachers--- give me a "amen!!".

A lot fo people don't understand that the refusal to kick the trouble makers out of school is a money issue. That's right. It's about money. If you are a minority child from a single parent home and you can't behave in school, you are classified as a child with a learning disability. If you suspend or expel the student, the attendance of the chld drops - naturally - and the BOE is in danger of losing control of the money coming from the state. So they ignore it and leave these little maggots in the classroom with the remaining students who want to follow the rules and learn. I recognize that there are children that do actually have learning disabiities but not as many as the BOE is receivng money for. They inflate the numbers to increase the supplement from the state. Plain and simple it's about the money. This came from a member of the BOE who disagrees with these programs. Get rid of the trouble makers and you wouldn't need the the deputies in the schools OR the supplements from the state. It's time to stop all this nonsense and provide an education for those who really want one and can follow the rules.

If my kid is harmed in any way I will take the law into my own hands.

not really a loss. I only ever see her siting in the main office. My child said she never came upstairs or went into the lunch room.

the school can have 7 intervention teachers but cant have 1 deputy. Something is wrong here.

Easy killer. Don't get your panties in a wad.

2:29 -- Do the math. Look at the miles a police officer must travel to respond to Mardela if something were to happen? The response time is at least twice that of the Salisbury schools. That being the case, how does your theory make any sense? If something happens in Salisbury the police are nearly next door. Quit your crying and leave Mardela alone. The only time you people mention Mardela is when you're trying to take something else away from it.

Mardela is certainly a wonderful school, but, if a middle school is to lose its SRO, why that choice would be Salisbury Middle is baffling. If you believe Mardela is in the same kind of neighborhood with the same issues and demographics as Salisbury Middle, there is nothing more to say other than congratulations on your new principal. Guess you believe that also came about with no help from someone on the Board.

Think about this Salisbury Middle is closest to the Sheriffs Office and in the normal areas that they are already responding to anyway. Response time would be quicker than other schools

Anonymous 11:48. It is not a liberal/conservative issue. Too many parents are unable or unwilling to parent their children.

Generally: Salisbury Middle School is in a dangerous neighborhood. The deputy kept the students and the staff safe. Why is SMS the only school to face this cut? Dr. Frederickson and the Board need to reconsider this decision for the safety of everyone.

Reference the comment by 7:05- I disagree. That deputy intervened and helped my daughter. I am very grateful to that Deputy and support the resource officers.
