Mayor's Curfew vs Burger King

Joe,

The Mayor seriously needs to go to Burger King (by the college) to explain about his curfew.

There were five people fired when they showed up to work on Monday.  Why?  Because they didn't show up to work the morning shift Sunday morning.  They were following the Mayor's curfew.

Next time he announces a curfew should those working fast food ignore it?

Maybe the mayor ought to curb his appetite for authority by thinking TWICE (maybe three times) before imposing a CURFEW. I'm sure he wishes he had the power to declare martial law...which would be a BAD mistake, but politicians ALWAYS think they have more authority than they do. And always think they need to guide the masses because the serfs are just too stupid to live without their constant guidance and supervision.

Boycot Burger King.

I'm not sure, but since Maryland had issued a state of emergency, doesn't the Mayor have the authority to declare a curfew during that time?

the mayor needs to step up and get legal involved and get these poor people their jobs back!

Shouldn't the manager of Burger King planned a little better? Was the manager not aware of the restrictions in place because of the weather? I know where each of my employees live, whether they were evacuating or not, who would be available if I chose to open shop on Sunday and/or Monday.

The manager of Burger King is the person who should be fired and I would not be surprised if thats what happens.

I was never informed there was a curfew at all. I do not know how a mayor would be able to reach out to 100% of the population to send this message unless he announced on Joe's blog or something. Still there were people without power, phone, internet, and those who have stopped listening to the MSM. Mostly intelligent people like store managers, who are too busy figuring taxes to have time listening to someone on to try to explain what is really happening outside any open window.

Jeeze, BK, it's over. There were no customers out there anyway to serve. Get real. hire them back ang let life go on...

4:23 Don't count on the mgr. being fired. The orders probably came from the owner to stay open. Seen it happen in snow storms all the time, even with no power.

Isn't it also the employees responsibility to contact their employer to say, "I will not be in due to the city imposed curfew" instead of just not showing up?

Also on another note regarding the curfew...Salisbury City police officers were specifically told not to enforce the curfew. So why impose a curfew?

You should have seen who signed the proclamation as witness for Ireton. A nobody secretary from the Fire Department. Maybe is should have been someone from the city council?

The curfew you are speaking about is not enforceable to start with. The employee's should have called to say they would not be in after all the police, fire and city employee's had to go to work. The news media was out reporting in the so called storm if the curfew was enforceable then they all should be in jail. Take your curfew and stick it where the sun don't shine!

I am doubting 5:01's comment.
I guess you would have to ask the state prison guard who got a ticket for trying to get to work on Saturday how that equates to nonenforcement.
I had no electric and knew nothing about it until well after 4PM when a friend called me.
I am no longer surprised by the stupidity and will now plan on a curfew everytime the wind blows.
We have never had one before and I have weathered worse storms, why start with this bullhockey now?

Stop telling people how to live their lives.

The mayor was right in what he did because he, like the rest of us, was relying on the weather reports. Everyone we saw doing these reports, such as the Weather Channel, was predicting dire consequences. Thankfully, the storm ended up a little out to sea, thus sparing us what could have been catastrophic damage. Had the mayor not declared a curfew and the storm materialized as forecast, all those who put themselves in peril would no doubt have been trying to blame the mayor. Enough of this Monday-morning quarterbacking.

As far as these Burger King employees are concerned, they should have called in and not assumed that their employer was even aware of the curfew. It's their responsibility to do that, and I would have thought that all who are employed somewhere would know enough to call in.

The Parsonsburg land debris wasn't scheduled to be open either. That is until a few citizens found the padlock to be unlatched and then opened the gate themselves.

Pollitt dropped the ball as he had not included the facility being opened in his emergency plan.

That was just mean and uncalled for.

I'm sure he will beat it in court, if true.

If you think for a minute that a BK employee won't work the system just as hard as they can, you are dreaming. No, I wouldn't have fired them, but I would have worked thru it. Did the manager try calling them? Probably not. Five people fired, that is insane. Where are you going to get five more trained people? Not in Salisbury, that's for sure.

Get outta town, 8:02. Firstly, the weather channel makes money hyping the weather and scaring people. You WATCH it more when they do that. Further, I can't imagine someone winding up in a ditch or stalled in a flooded road and screaming out the window "damn you mayor!! Why did you let me go out?!!" There is something called Darwin elimination. If you want to go outside to see the terrifying majesty of a tornado (or hurricane) and you get killed, well, thats what happens to stupid people. Curfews are NOT to be imposed upon free citizens by their government for a damn wind and rainstorm. 5:40 is already cowered and accepting of this Nazi controlling power trip by a small town mayor. A mayor thinks he can control citizens with a curfew over a rainstorm?? What a swellheaded, self-important, egotistical, and arrogant move....

State of Emergency...curfew...major evacuations thru-out the county and neighboring counties. So tell me was there really a dire need for Burger King to be open? Of course not! However that corporation wants their money no matter what so what do they care if employees die trying to get there, after all employees are a dime a dozen right? Some of the comments just crack me up. Just admit it some of you wouldn't be happy no matter what the situation was. Some people couldn't find a positive in finding out a long lost relative left you 600lbs of solid gold...you'd just moan and whine about how you have to haul it or have to pay taxes on it.

If you think for a minute that a BK employee won't work the system just as hard as they can, you are dreaming.

Just because they work at burger king they will 'work the system'? What does that mean exactly anyway?

You don't know any of these people yet you group them into some sort of category in your mind?

Give them credit, they HAD a job. They were obeying the law, even if the wisdom of such a law is questionable.

Seems to me they were fired for no good reason even if they did not call in. It is reasonable to assume that the manager knew about the curfew.

Sounds like the bk manager just wanted to exercise some authority just because he could. How he became manager should be examined.

He doesn't sound like he is managerial material to me. Just a dork with a little more seniority than others it seems to me.
