NY Motorcyclist Killed Protesting Helmet Law

Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

While our prayers go out to Mr. Contos’ family, we have to ask – Can you spell irony? – Ed.

So did he win or lose in his fight against "the man?"

he was willfully participating in an illegal act.
wonder if his insurance company can get out of paying anything.

i really don't know what the big deal is. drivers have to wear seat belts, why shouldn't motorcyclist have to wear helmets?

and before people say its a right to choose. driving/riding is not a right, but a privilege. you are free to ride without a helmet on any road you pave on your private property. public roads have the requirements.

The very definition of irony. Wow. I nominate the guy for a Darwin award.

The big deal is that we are supposed to be FREE to do what we want as long as we don't harm others. The Govt does not tell us how to live or how to die. Get it?

Government is not our "parent".

Based on some comments, looks like a fall without helmet won't hurt you.

I've got to agree with 4:36 & 6:12. It's my choice, and yes, I know that it's an imposition to make it necessary for a paramedic to clean up the mess and to have the others on scene to have to view it, but really, it happens every day in other ways anyway.
This is from a biker who has NEVER ridden without a helmet, but by my own CHOICE.

"Free" to be a moron ..it's just there are so many dummies that the gov. has to step in and say..."Hey dummy, put a helmet on".

Ironic as it may be, he was doing something he believed in, unlike those who only wish their will be forced on others.

I haven't seen all of the details of the crash but I would bet a car is involved.

Regardless, a man lost his life.

for those that say helmets should be a choice

the gov says you have to have tags, insurance, and a license to drive on thier roads.

why not protest all of this?

its no diff then requiring a helmet

i never ride without one. i have a responsibility to my family

do you put tags license and insurance on your head when you drive?
