Lightning Ignites Mount Airy Church

Lightning from a thunderstorm started an early-morning fire Sunday at a Mount Airy church that injured a firefighter, according to the Frederick County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The blaze at Marvin United Methodist Chapel on Woodville Road was reported at 5 a.m. by a passerby. Seventy-five firefighters battled the fire for an hour before bringing it under control.

One firefighter was injured and taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. Fire officials could not be reached Sunday to confirm the severity of the firefighter’s injuries or current condition.

The fire caused $150,000 in damage to the church, with most of the damage confined to the roof of the church sanctuary. Firefighters from Frederick and Carroll counties prevented the fire from spreading into the office and educational wings of the building, according to the fire marshal’s office.

Phone calls to the church Sunday afternoon were unanswered.
