ACLU Gives Virginia Legislature Mixed Report Card

The ACLU of Virginia found some good and some bad in legislation passed by the 2011 General Assembly.

Kent Willis, executive director of the organization that advocates for civil liberties, decried passage of a measure that requires the State Board of Health to regulate abortion clinics in the same way it does hospitals. He also found fault with the failure of a proposed constitutional amendment that would have repealed a lifetime ban on voting by felons.

Willis praised a bill that would require more training for police on police lineups. Extending protective orders to dating relationships also drew praise.

If not for the Virginia Senate, several bills curtailing liberties would have passed, Willis said. He cited a proposed constitutional amendment that would have allowed prayers at high school football games.

He also cited a failed bill that would have required voters to show a government issued ID before voting.

The ACLU reviewed about 100 bills. Most of the laws took effect Friday.

I just cannot support anything the ACLU stands for.

The ACLU needs to be disbanded. They are worthless and don't consistently stand for anything. I can't believe they are against people showing ID before voting. That should be mandatory in all 50 states.
