Folks, this is not an easy Post for me to put together and share but it is what it is.
Jack Willing, (head of the Somerset Planning & Zoning) committed suicide yesterday at his home.
It has been reported Jack was under investigation from the Feds involving child pornography. Warrants were served to Somerset County yesterday and he knew they were going to be served at his home as well. The Feds had run a sting operation whereas Jack had purchased child pornography, had it delivered to his home, he accepted the package and signed for it.
All that being said, he went home and took his own life. In most cases, generally speaking, it's against the golden rule to post any articles referencing suicide but the twist to this particular story calls for such said attention in the hopes that others become aware that the Feds are in fact doing what they're supposed to do, protect our children.
Jack was an Attorney and worked for Somerset County Planning & Zoning.

I realize that your news blog is dedicated to reporting the news and other people's opinions. May I ask you a few questions? Do you have a family? Do you have a son or daughter sir? As I sit at my computer, my heart is broken. You see, Mr. Alberto, in Chance, MD tonight is a mom and dad and two sisters who's life has fallen apart. Jack's mom is not well and I'm sure his Dad isn't either with this tragedy. Did you really have to print this information on this blog sight? Out of respect for a
family that has just lost their only son, please for their sake remove this article. The investgation is still going on sir. I'm sure in due time, the press will have it out in print. Let the investigation be finished first. You see sir, this could be our son or our daughter, but by the Grace of God. Please don't post this right now. I know this family personally, they are wonderful folks and frankly they are dealing with enough to lose their only son. Mr. Willing was not practicing as an attorney. He claosed his law office a year or so ago.

I think that he once was practicing law with "Tony" Bruce, who poisoned himself several years back.
If this is true, he probably did the best thing he could do actually.
People that do this sort of thing are scum. I'd bet a large majority of them have also molested atleast one child. I'm not saying this guy did, but he put himself in that category.

I knew Jack Willing when he was in college and first starting his career. He seemed to me very kind and a little shy. I have some trouble believing what has been alleged, but am sure something must have been weighing on him very heavily for him to make this decision. I agree with the other poster though, that maybe the negative comments should be tempered until the investigation is finished and comments like "he deserved it" are just spiteful and hurtful to those who knew him and are grieving.
Let's make something very clear here. The investigation is done, period.
The Feds were there to serve warrants, period. They had served the County and were going to serve his home and he made the decision to taker his own life.
Now, with all due respect, the party who gets the information out first always takes the most heat because no one wants to hear stories like this, especially the Family.
I'll tell you how tough this is. I happen to personally know one of his Family Members and consider them a very close friend whom I respect like there's no tomorrow. This was NOT an easy article to write/expose. Imagine how it would have come out IF I hadn't known a Family Member. Think on that one for a while.

This is very surprising and sad. Mr. Willing also served on the Somerset County school board for whatever that information is worth.
you had no right posting this story and exposing all the details of the investigation. you are not a journalist nor affiliated with any creditable news company. i do not believe you knew any one of the family and i do believe that you are very cold hearted. to post that this poor man has passed is one thing, but putting details of his hard times on the internet for millions to see is very wrong. especially when those very details led him to take his own dear life. please take this article off, if not out of respect for that poor mans family, to prove to everyone else in the world that you have some compassion for others.

I wouldn't have posted this story at this juncture. Jack Willing was very nice. If there is any truth to what Joe says, it sounds like entrapment that might not have been prosecutable.

This is very sad but I have to agree that the Feds would not have been involved if this were not true. It's just to bad that the Feds didn't get involved when the former warden James L. Henderson was abusing inmates in the detention center. Had they done so, maybe justice would have been served in a similar manner.

At a time like this, we need to think about his family and their lost and feelings. Do you think putting his his business out on the internet is helping matters any. I knew these people very well. To say they knew about it or had an inclination of this I cannot concur. My child is in that school district and to think I had a person like this as President of the Board of Education is humiliating and disturbing. If memory serves me right he was appointed back as President. How did this happen ...was it the Governor approve of this appointment? Director of P&Z? Was he a land attorney?? and then switched over? Or was it the GOOD OLE Boy network that got him that job. Great going Somerset County!! Time to move from this corruptive county.

This incident is very unfortunate for the family of Mr. Willing. I do feel sorry for them. This story is about Somerset County in General and how the powers to be appoint and hire their friends and families to high level positions even when sometimes it is well known that they are not qualified, or have other skeletons in there closet. Someone mentioned warden Henderson. It was well known that he had been terminated from ECI because of abuse and sure enough Somerset county hired him as warden and he again abused inmates and was forced to resign. We witnessed the way in which the new administrator was hired without advertising for the job. The judge, county attorney, county administrator, county commissioner, roads board director, judge of the orphans court, and more are all related by blood or marriage. This is no way to run a county. It is very embarassing to admit living in Somerset county. Keep the pressure on Joe.

For the US Postal Inspection Service and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agencies to be in Somerset they had all they needed. They were the ones who searched the office and his home. These aren't people who just stop by for a visit.

I had known Jack for about 20 years. I used to see him when he started out in the courthouse title searching and he moved his way up. It is so unbelieveable and now I use this as an example of why I don't let my children spend the night with other people. Seems like no matter how much you think you know someone, you might never know who they really are. This is so sad.
And Joe, no this is not a story that anyone wants to read, especially a family member who is dealing with this, BUT, it is a story that needs to be printed in order to keep the children safe. I am sorry for his family and I am very sorry for the children who were abused in order to satify someone through pornography.

To 8:51 Donnie, Henderson didn't exactly step down. He was given the option to resign in a deal that was worked out between James Antonelli and Davis Ruark in order to avoid state prosecution. That didn't stop the good ole boys in Somerset giving him another position. Wonder what he will do next and what position he will be rewarded with.

apparently your readers do not read other news organizations stories...The U.S. Attorney said in a statement that there was an ongoing federal investigation and that no charges had been filed. The criminal justice system in America provides innocent until proven guilty. The U.S. attorney also issued condolences to the family. Jack Willing Jr. was a great public servant loved by the people of Somerset County for his service to his party,his community and was a brilliant attorney. We live is American not China, The Soviet Union or North Korea. Lets pray for the family and community as they put Jack will to rest.

Donnie 8:51, you could not be more wrong. Henderson was forced to resign or charges would have been brought against him. He was investigated and the facts were revealed. He abused inmates, period. Child preditors are certainly horribly people and should be severely punished, but abusers like Henderson should also endure the same consequences.
I sign for packages all the time without knowing whats inside, maybe he did too. When my teenage son was young (underage) he ordered porn off the internet using a made up credit card number and my husband and I had to pay because it was done on our computer. Goes to show it can happen to anyone so give Jack a break unless you know the absolute truth. I personally know him and he is a great guy both professionally and personally. His family is a very down to earth honest family. His mom is very sick right now and doesn't need all these negative comments about her son. We all possess skeletons in our closet to some degree so think about some of yours before you comment negatively about Jack. He is a great friend and I am very proud to call him that. If you don't know him personally, keep your comments to yourself. You are only showing your ignorance about someone you know nothing about. As far as all the Somerset County comments, if you don't like it here MOVE its a simple solution. If you don't like the way the County is run, run for office yourself and try to change it. I don't know why his distant family didn't try to get him help for if outsiders believed him to be strange in sex practices then certainly his cousins and in-laws saw it. For one thing nothing is certain. obviously something happened that caused mr. willing to take his own life. but there was no criminal charges filed. this is all speculation as to what it is. i find it hilarious that everyone seems to know exactly what happened when the family hasnt even heard. Jack tried hard to just be a good man, unfortunately he was apparently born with a problem that no one was aware of. He did a good job as an attorney, board of education member, and P&Z director. He would have performed well as states attorney had he been elected in the last election. Some one needs to now fill his shoes in these positions. Let's hope some competant person will run for the elected positions because as we all know, we need change that we can believe in, especially in the states attorneys office.
So today the family had a funeral at the funeral home in Princess Anne. Hinmans. No fanfare that he would have received had he just died. Truth is Jack, Jr. was a child molester. The inlaws removed know this to be factual. THey did not want their children around him. BUT that also tells me that lots of people knew and did nothing to help him. Was he molested as a child? and Child molesters become child molesters. He should have gone into counseling. The family issued statements that l. it was over a CD 50,000.00 that he did not file on? (LIE) 2. the US Attorney Office said it was a mild infraction that was "blown" up by media. (another LIE) Jack, Jr. went into the internet and order material for his sickness...child porn. He was guilty of molesting children but because he was a Willing and in the Somerset County good ole boys network the charges were "sealed". Thefact remains he had a good family and his mother is dying. We all are very sorry for his mother and father and siblings. THE facts are stil the facts so family don't give statements that the world can pick apart. I still think he should have been introduced to counseling for his addiction of child porn. Someone has to take the blame along with himself. It is sad fact remains. We are very sorry for the family. BUT he was a darn COWARD. He did the crime but was selfish and cowardly and did not pay his time....and left his family to handle all his mess. How in the world could someone who buys and views child pornography have "performed well as state's attorney"? I don't care if you call pedophilia or an addiction to this stuff a "problem", it is illegal and each image he viewed or possessed and each tape he bought was the commission of a felony. The people that the feds catch with this stuff routinely get prison sentences of 5, 8, 13 years. Just look at former delegate McKee, who got five years in prison.
Most people thought Jack lacked the skills as a trial attorney to even consider running for state's attorney. Knowing now that he himself was a criminal makes his candidacy for a law enforcement position all the more ludicrous.

My heart goes out to the Willing family and I commend Joe for reporting the facts. A lot of you very people that made your negative comments about Michael Jackson are some of the same hypocrites that want to defend Mr. Willing. Michael Jackson like Mr. Willing was not found guilty. Yeah, I know what's next. Why did Michael pay millions of dollars if not guilt? Well, you know what my next question is. Why did Mr. Willing take his life if not guilty? I say we should have compassion for all families. We need to pray more for one another. Yeah, we need to start by weeding out the bad seeds,as there are so many corrupt officials in Somerset county. Like it or not, it is what it is.
to 10:29 The AC (Animal Control) job that was posted was for a supervisor position to be paid $25,000 per year. When the job was handed to Henderson, our esteemed commissioners created a new job position which made Henderson a department head. This new job was never posted or approved by the taxpayers. Wonder how many others they slide under the table?

Having known Jack, I as were all of his friends shocked at this. He in fact dated women however was never married. Why does sexual preference even come into this situation? I know this is becoming old news however once again it never ceases to amaze me how judgmental people from this area are. The US Attorneys office issued a statement where they stated Willing was not arrested and no criminal charges had been filed and went on to extend their condolences to his family. How about we stick with the innocent until proven guilty theory and get over it? As far as the comment about his connection to Tony Bruce and him having poisoned himself.....once again people speaking without knowledge as his death certificate DID NOT list his death as a suicide........hmmmmmm....guess that means there is just one more person capable of a serious crime wandering our streets and no one ever took the time or effort to investigate that......it was easier to believe he killed himself because he was having problems in his personal and professional life.
the only problem with somerset county is you fing baltimorons that come down here and complain, if you dont like it then run for office, if you dont have the balls for it then go back home, theres more people trying to get here on the bay bridge than there is trying to go on your side. the family wished to keep the funeral private and only allowed family members and close friends, which included individuals of every age. it is simply sad that everyone has nothing better to do than run down a mans name, especially when those that do have something they are guilty of. all documents should be sealed anyway not because some good ole boys network bullshit. there is no reason for the public to ever learn of anything when the man's own family hasnt heard of any charges or findings. joe if you have a heart, you will not only post every comment, but you will please ask everyone to keep the negative comments to themselves, its not right to the family. they are good people, whatever skeletons jack had are now with him wherever his soul is, but now his poor family has to sit and bear the flood. please its got to stop. i beg you and everyone else. at least until all evidence and charges have been released to the general public

So, what does the dog catcher make now? I'm sure he would like to have the P&Z job. That would be a step up. When he resigned from the warden position he said that he was going to move on to better things. So far he hasn't achieved any thing other than being dog catcher. If he applies our commissioners just might give him the job.

All of you commenting about it can try to make Somerset County a better place if you dislike the county so much along with the people who are trying to make it better. Grow some balls and run your self. Or MOVE. This poor man has died and you all are more worried about the Good Ole Boys and Jimmy Henderson. When the election comes up next you all run. See if you can make it better. Stop the negative comments and pay respect to the family. He was a good man and no one has any right to down him with negative comments. Chill out 7:19. We live in the information world now and everything is public knowledge. Public figures should expect their lives to be exposed in life and death. Look at what is going on right now with Michael Jackson. Jackson was wierd in life and wierder in death. As far as James Henderson, he is still a public official and people can say what they they want about him, good or bad. Frankly I don't know what anyone could possible say good about him.

It really makes me angry that the media is sensationalizing Michael Jackson as if he were some God, but Jack Willing's name has been destroyed by this blog when the accusations against Jack are just rumors and speculation. And if they are true, which I believe they are not, what he did is no worse than what Michael Jackson did, who is being buried in a gold casket and having his funeral aired around the world.
So what's the problem. I would agree that the problem is that the whole world is celebrating Michael Jackson, not that rumors are circulating about Mr. Willing.
If Mr. Willings family had wanted to have a celebration of Mr. Willings death they could have done so. That was their choice. Had they done so, I'm sure it would have been well attended and many good things said about Mr. Willing. However you cannot blame this site or anyone else for trying to find out the truth in a situation like this. Mr. Willing was a public official and the people should have a right to know if illegal activity took place at the taxpayers expense.

2:18, I agree with you to a certain extent, however, no other news media reported that Jack was being investigated for child pornography. The Daily Times only hinted at it. He was never charged with or arrested for any crime, and in this country a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He has a family that suffering, his mom is terminally ill, and posting things on this website that have been proven to be true is only adding to their suffering. Even the U.S. States Attorney said it was just a minor infraction that was blown out of proportion by the media.

I don't recall the US attorney saying anything about this being a minor infraction. Jack wasn't charged because he took his life before the feds had enough time to examine his computers and gather all of the evidence. If Jack had not believed that this was a serious matter, he surely would not have taken his life. I doubt his parents read this site.
