it doesnt suprise me the kids just cross anywhere they want ....they wont use crosswalks and just step out in front of moving cars ..... plus if you are going towards snow hill rd in the morning you get blinded by the sun and can barely see cars in front of you let alone a kid improperly crossing
I dread driving anywhere near Bennett before school or at dismissal time. Like Anon. 10:52 said, the kids just walk into traffic. You can have a crossing guard, cross walks, traffic lights every 10 ft. & MOST would still just walk wherever they please. It's like a game of dodge kids to them. They have no idea how damaging it would be to the person who is unfortunate enough to be driving the car that hits them, either, never mind their own injuries or death.
I rarely see kids cross where the crossing guard is located, and those that don't cross there, definitely don't use the cross walks. I've seen several kids dodge cars in that area- some of them laughing as though it is a real life game of Frogger. That whole area is a mess in the mornings. The lights are screwed up, traffic is always backed up, cars switching in and out of lanes to try and get moving ahead- and kids running around cars to get to school.
Every time I drive down College Avenue when school lets out the kids walk and run right in front of the cars to cross over College Avenue they do not care and do not respect the drivers.
3:37 WE know a kid was hit and it is very unfortunate. However, drive down College Ave. any school morning/afternoon between 7:15am to 8:00am and 2:45pm to 3:15pm and tell me what you see. KIDS crossing and dodging cars and having a great time doing. Maybe it's a game to them or maybe they are just plain smart ass kids who think they are entitled to cross where ever they want. I take my son to and from school at Bennett Middle everyday and this is what i see. Nobody wants to see these kids get hurt that is why there is a light at every block and a crossing guard and crosswalk. They just need to use their brains a little
Why don't they put up fences to force the wee little ones from walking anything but on the crosswalk. Do this in part with a campaign with a police department about properly using the crosswalk. Then make sure there is a crossing guard to manage the intersection.
Yes a child was hit but until someones does something, the next one could end up dead. If these kids dont want to obey the law than they should be punished. Make them go to Saturday school. Make them do community service. This is the perfect time of year. All the leaves are falling and Im sure there are many senior citizens that could use the help cleaning up the leaves. Put a rake in their hand. These are the same people that will be driving a car on the road in a few years we need to make sure they know what the law is there for.
Kids must also be taught to have some responsibility for their own safety, which,in this case, would come from obeying the rules (law) regarding crossing at crosswalks and obeying the directions of the crossing guard. Speed cameras CANNOT give some a new level of intelligence. I have driven past these schools in the morning and in the afternoon. Its chaos and some kids DO think its a game and openly taunt and challenge drivers, who, by the way, ARE OBEYING THE SPEED LIMIT. Another example of blaming someone else for your own stupid actions and consequent injury. It's how we roll in this country....should be no surprise its NOT the fault of someone running in front of a moving vehicle...
Folks, the real truth here is a complete disregard for others - Many of the parents of these children simply have no regard for others, and I have personally observed their parents doing the exact same things - in fact, I observed a PARENT of one of these kids just yesterday, walk out in front of traffic and cross slowly (on purpose) like she was entitled to rule the road of her own regard! When you have parents doing this, what makes any of us think the kids will act any differently? As a Bennett teacher, I was horrified to hear the news of a child being hit, but like so many of the others who have commented here, I am hardly surprised to hear this distrubing news. We all hope this youngster will recover and will have learned a lesson to share with the peer group, but the larger issue in our community is one of parents simply failing their children. The weight of the world seems to be heaped upon educators to do everything for children and their families, but until we can legislate parenting, there will be no change. I see so many parents each day with a complete distain and disregard for their children and the basic concepts of parenting that it is truley absurd. The community at large is screaming for something to be done about crime, gangs, etc., but this community is going down hill fast, turning out of control at an alarming rate. This is my final year of teaching, and I hope that as I pass the torch to the next generation, they will take it upon themselves to take action for themselves. Let's all hope this youngster will recover - let's all see if we can't find a way to make them safer despite the shortcomings of their parents, and let's all find ways to make our community safer in every way.
Im sorry all the neg comments on here, sounds like none of you have children. Pray for the kid that is hurt and than worry about all the comments. Think about it ,this is someones child.. It could have been yours!!!!
to the mother of three boys 12:59... i have a kid. he's almost 4. he knows better than to run out in traffic. we always use crosswalks and he always looks both ways. why does he do that? because we love him and TAUGHT him to do that.
these are middle & high school kids. they have no respect for the law and/or their own safety. I have driven down that stretch of road before & after school and witnessed myself the total lack of regard for traffic. Heck, about 2 months ago we were driving that road and there was a group of kids standing in front of the middle school & jumping out at the cars as they drove by!! we called the police to report it - who knows what happened.
i do feel sorry for the kid who was hit... not because he/she got hurt, though. i feel sorry that he/she wasn't taught any better by his/her family. what a shame.

Sounds like those speeding cameras are needed after all.
the kids run in front of cars on purpose! especially over by Wi Middle... doesn't surprise me either.....smh
maybe he/she should go back to elementary school and re-learn how to look both ways...
