A Letter To The Editor

Did you read Earl Holland's, front page Sports Section article regarding UMES HAWKS Volleyball team, "Favored to win MEAC North".., well, get a load of this:

Earlier this week, not sure what day, four UMES girl students were caught red handed and on tape, shop lifting less than $100 each of items from the Wal Mart store. Three and maybe four of them were on the UMES Women's volleyball team, to include some of their BEST players.

These perpetrators and UMES students have been dismissed from the school... Some were on full scholarship at UMES. What a brainless thing for these young women to do, something that will live with them for the rest of their lives.

UMES is about the same as grade school. It offers education degrees without a learning experience.

There's a history of this kind of thing at UMES, though it often gets swept under the rug.
Anybody remember a number of years back when a couple students got caught misappropriating over $10,000 from the Student Fund.. never prosecuted. They were allowed to quietly withdraw from the school and disappear, taking the problem and bad publicity with them.

its UMES, what would you expect?

Hey, the article says the students, athletes or not, were expelled. Give UMES a break for doing the right thing.
As for the one's expelled, there's no cure for stupid.

I believe there are simply people who react to any piece of negative news as "all of [insert group] are like that". It's a convenient way to miraculously make yourself into a shining star

How could anyone throw away a free ticket to college like that?

UMES is a great school and offers programs that SU doesn't have. There have been some great local professionals that were educated at UMES.

kudos to the coach and administration for not sweeping this under the rug! they have the right coach to provide education on and off the court.
It's good to see a Division one athletics program doing the right thing....regardless of talent or potential win/loss record. A lot of other DI schools should take note

Many crimes go unreported or get swept under the rug down there. The school doesnt want the crime stats. Higher crime...less money given to them.
Whats the graduation rate down there ??? About 23% ?? All these inner city youth that got pushed thru school and have no idea what it takes.
Great programs are offered there, but the folks in the classes are mostly knuckleheads and thugs.

umes? just more welfare, and more of our hard earned tax dollars going to waste! funy how the majority of students go there for free. but my kids have to pay!
well at least my kids aren't spending good money to get a bs degree in hotel management!
every third world immigrant seem's to be able to come over here and run a 7-11 or a hotel without anything more than a 7th grade education. go figure!

"UMES is about the same as grade school. It offers education degrees without a learning experience."

Written by someone with barely a high school diploma ...

I had a wonderful experience at UMES and feel that it prepared me well for graduate school. EVERY college has a few bad apples in the bunch.

I went to UMES and probably make more than some of you writing ignorant comments about the school and yes I had to pay for it. By the way, didn't a student from SU just microwave a cat? I guess all of those students are sick little serial killers like everyone at UMES is a thug and on welfare.

UMES is a decent school, just has some bad apples like any other campus.I will tell you this,I think alot of the sports scholarships are too generous.I overheard a student tell someone he got a "free ride" for playing basketball and since his avg in high school was 3.0,he only had to maintain a 1.50 to keep his free ride at college.WTH?How is that acceptable? What exactly will he be educated to do if he cant play sports when he graduates?
