TROOPERS ARREST MAN ON CDS CHARGES

On February 15, 2010 at 11:44 pm, A Trooper from the Salisbury Barrack of the Maryland State Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Bethel Road at Richland Road in Willards. The Trooper detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver and requested the driver to step out of the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. The Trooper patted the driver down for his safety and felt an object in the driver’s pants pocket. The Trooper asked the driver what was in his pocket and the driver produced a baggie of marihuana. The Trooper charged the driver identified as Timothy Jay Sollers, 32, of Willards with possession of marihuana and drug paraphernalia. Sollers was taken to WCDC where he was awaiting a hearing with a commissioner.

Pat downs are for the officer's safety, to determine if the citizen has a weapon or something that could be used for a weapon. After the officer feels safe, he should no longer be concerned with what's in the person's pockets. When was the last time an officer was threated with a sandwich bag?
