A Letter To Dr. Fredericksen

Mr. Frederickson,

I am writing you this letter to express my concern of you holding schools open today, 02-16-2010. I live near the intersection of West and Adkins Rd and am still having terrible difficulty just trying to get out of my development. The roads on many locations are still impassable and thus should still be deemed dangerous. I do understand the fact that children need to get back to school sooner than later, I just don't think that it is as important as there safety and well-being. Please take the time to meet with the members of the Board of Ed. and re-think the standard procedures for which you make your decisions. If you would like further feedback from the public please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Malaki Greer (Parent)

Yeah...lets close ALL the schools in Wicomico County today for you. Your attitude typifies what is wrong with this country. The consideration should be for the majority....a concept referred to as democracy.

Just drive safe. Open with a two hour delay. You can't keep the kids out of school forever.

I agree. They should at least make sure the buses can make it down the roads. My daughter was waiting for the bus this morning and the bus couldn't make the turn to come down our road so he did not pick her up. So we had to take her to school (from Pittsville to Salisbury). We have not had one county truck come clear our road. Only the local farmer down our road has cleared it some. So Wicomico County please send a truck to the corner of Tingle & Davis Road in Pittsville so a bus can get through.

If ya can't get them to school safely then keep them home... call the school and tell them why your kids won't be there... ask them to email their work to them if possible...

After busting my lip and my chin this morning trying to get to my car to go to work, I made the sound decision not to come back home to get my son to take him to Delmar Elementary for he is shuttled from the Delmar Middle school but Delaware Buses are not running today. Waller Road is a solid sheet of ice and how about Hebron yesterday I had to take a detour to get my step children home. I think taking back the spring break instead of making them stay in school longer due to Mother Nature is unfair. Heck all these weeks off is break enough. Some one call Captain Willie and ask him to pick some of these Decision making people up and give them the Grand tour from up above. Sincerly a Busted lip Mom in Delmar DE. LOL

it's not the roads, it's the fools driving on them.

Wow ,,,, We got jusut as much snow in worcester county and have half the issues you folks have. Kudos goes out to our sha and county and municipal workers. Our streets are in good shape, the sidewalks are still covered a bit but hey such is life after 2 blizzads.

ok here is the problem with them opening schools today. They just didnt bother picking children up at all. The children on Morris Rd. in Pittsville didn't get picked up or even called to say the bus wasn't coming. After calling the boe transportation unit they had no answers. Just knew there were problems. Called county roads they are working on the issues. BUT the board of ed is not talking to county roads. NO COMMUNICATION NO HELP NO ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!

Years ago, there was one bus stop per development and it was at the main entrance. There were neighborhood bus stops. These days the buses seem to stop every block or so. In my opinion, if you noticed that the road was bad at the turn, you should have taken your child to meet the bus at the turn in order to prevent the bus from attempting this turn. We have all gotten so spoiled and think we deserve so much more than we do. If you feel it's too dangerous, keep your kids home.

Drive your kids to school! Carpool! Or walk them! I cannot believe there are so many crybabies around here. They should simply move the bus routes to the streets that are plowed and have parents walk/drive their kids to alternate places to get picked up. This is not hard to figure out. Unless you are going to claim that for the last week you have never left your house, and your kids didn't either, you can find a way to get them to school.

So I have to say, I live in the same area, and I am quite frustrated. We are relatively new to salisbury, having moved here a year and a half ago from near Buffalo NY. I was notified by one of my children this morning that the school bus simply skipped our road. They were out there in plenty of time, the bus just never came. called the schools involved and the transportation department and was just told that the bus driver couldn't get down Naylor Mill rd. My wife and I were already at work by then, and there was no way for us to get them to school now. Would have been nice to know.

I'm for getting the kids to school safely. The blame doesn't come to the schools, they aren't the ones taking care of the Roads. Where was the county when all the plows were running around with their blades up? 5 inches of snow, not plowed, but driven on, just turns into 2.5 inches of ice. And becomes almost impossible to remove. Maybe the DOT people should take a trip to Western NY and learn how to handle snow.

Someone at the county roads dept needs to be fired. There is absolutely no excuse for the roads not being cleared a week after the storm. I live in a well populated subdivision, and we have yet to see a plow since the first storm! However, I also believe the kids need to be back in school. While there is still snow on some roads, they are passable. You can't tell me you haven't left your house in over a week!

Most parents work they can't take their kids to school on a 2 hour delay! I called BOE transportation they said they have 4 guys who go out and report to Dr. Fredericksen they told him there were problems. GUESS WHAT? HE DIDN'T CARE AND HERE WE ARE! Kids left at home and still not going to school. Parents have to work they can't play taxi that is why we pay taxes for bus transportation!

I'm sure Dr. Frederickson thinks the way we deal with snow is a joke, after all, he spent the last 35 years in Minnesota..lol

The county roads department should be ashamed, as well as the county leadership for not clearing the roads. Some heads should definitely roll!

I figure my county road will see a plow about July the 4th. Seems the only time they know I'm part of the county, is when they send the tax bill.

Luckily, we have a very good bus driver, I trust him completely, but it's the other drivers I dont trust!!!

I live on a cul de sac in Willards. After having the road plowed but NOT the cul de sac, (do we deserve to be left stranded bc the driver couldn't figure out how to drive in a circle?) I called the county. He admitted he knew of this problem. Wico Co REALLY needs to rehire, retrain, rethink their snow removel (or lack thereof) procedures. There is NO excuse for roads still not being cleared and these kids HAVE to go back to school. I also agree with us being spoiled and lazy. Make arrangements to get your kids to school, not like any of this weather "snuck up" on us!

Heads may roll in some other places, but they will never roll at the Board of Ed. Even having Board workers doing projects in the yard of a central office boss at county expense and on county time is acceptable. Did he even have to pay back the county for what he stole?

10:18- my niece and nephew live on Morris Rd. My nephew goes to Parkside and was picked up, my niece, who's in the 3rd grade and goes to Pittsville Elem. never did get picked up. My guess is some bus drivers are more comfortable driving on these type roads..

10:38 Face it, you're a bitter human being who can't understand that some of us actually care about our child's safety. You? Bet you're glad you can sit back with your chips and soda while you catch up on Young & Restless today!!

We should all invest in tire chains for the next time this happens.

12:40, when did 10:38 ever express any tendency of laziness......they didn't. Instead that poster expressed that the cry babies do some work and be responsible parents and get their children to school, stop relying on everyone to take care of your own kids. Put forth some extra effort and drop them off.

Ok...I bet that a lot the complainers here are the same ones that complained about extending the school year to cover the lost school days due to snow. I bet that every single one of the people complaining also drove a vehicle on these "horrible" roads within the last week so apparently they aren't bad enough to keep you at home. The issue is that if every single road and its condition is considered in determining whether or not school will be open then schools wouldn't be open for weeks! If the bus simply didn't come this morning then you should thank your bus driver for showing his or her discretion in not accepting the liability of transporting your students to school this morning. What's worse is that if the driver that expressed their discretions had some sort of accident or incident on the way to school, you would be up in arms about it! Now we have complainers about opening school when you feel that it shouldn't but 5 months from now you are going to be complaining about schools being open too far into the summer. It's a no win with some of you folks! You have a child and you have a responsibility as a parent to get them to school.

The roads suck because the budget was cut severely this year, but you don't want to pay additional taxes (which is debatable) or actively assist in cracking down on local government spending in order to adequately fund the proper services. The BOE wants to open schools to provide a proper education but they don't don't have the budget to extend school into July, but yet a handfull of parents want to fund the hell out of the magnet program so that their children can be segragated from the "filth." You all dug your own grave, now lay in it!

Basically, what I am getting at is that you all, as tax payers, have the ability to change to way things are operated in this County but you choose to silence your voice and complain annonymously on a blog and write BS letters when the stuff actually hits the fan! Be proactive and get involve instead of just complaining when things don't go as YOU planned them because your plan isn't the plan that's being followed because you spoke up far too late! This issue is bigger than snow days; the snow days and their effects on your life are a direct result of previous mismanagement of money throughout the County, especially within the BOE and Road Division. If you got out to Council meetings and spoke up then you might actually see some changes. Until then, DEAL WITH IT!
