The special financing (“TIF”) deal that the City of Salisbury has agreed to give to the owners of the site pales in comparison to the parking lot deal they are getting from Pollitt and his four pals on the County Council – Cannon, Hughes, MacLeod and McCain. The price they have approved to buy 5 acres across Glen Avenue from the Civic Center -- about 1.5 Million Dollars ($300,000 per acre) -- is several times more than that land is worth. And their argument that they are using “free” money from the state, and that the citizens have no voice in its use unless they paid the tax funding for it is arrogance beyond belief.
This mess should be vetoed with one of those $23 pens and dumped into a $400 trash can, but that won’t happen with that group in charge.
Their action and attitude would deserve an impeachment or recall effort if their terms did not end later this year when they will have to be reelected in order to remain in power. Better to devote time and effort to making sure that does not happen, and to see that the diligent members of the Council – Bartkovich, Prettyman and Holloway -- are reelected unless one of them runs for the County Executive office instead, in which case support for that is appropriate.
Don’t be surprised if “Reelect Rick Pollitt” signs are posted on other parts of the mall site later this year, along with those for any of his pals that want to stay in office. They have announced that they want to buy even more land at the old mall with taxpayers’ funding.

Pollitt and the "gang of four" have got to go!
wtf? free money from the state? just where do they think the state got the money from. shafting the tax payer from county level or state level. not one cent of it is free. mabe to a person who don't pay tax then he could free maney, but some where they got him too.
And let's hope that Gail Bartkovich or Joe Holloway is the next County Exec.
Gee, I'd like to sell some land to the county. My house and land are worth about $270,000 (on a good day). That should be good for at least $1.8 million, by the county's generous offer program.
And I'd like the city to make an offer, too, because I live on the edge of the poverty-plagued streets that Barrie and Gary and their landlord buddies created.
Hope you all don't mind if they pay for it with tax money they got from farmers selling their land or from low-cost housing grant money that came from other tax sources.
Joe Hollway's been aweful quiet lately. Hiding behind the issues. Not sure about him. We need someone with a big 'Ol pair of B#$lls!! I vote for Joe Albero!!!!
11:05 Yes!
Or Gail B.....She has always been there for what is right for the people. It's time for a woman to get the house in order.
We haven't heard from Rick today. Ricky you got some spainin to do.
yes...I am sure Joe knows more about appraising than licensed appraisers....get over it.
Right now LIVE on WQMR radio someone called-in and wanted to know what was going on in Wicomico regarding the purchase of 5 acres.
They were saying that the school parking lot was large enough to accomodate any event in the arena.
They are condemning Wicomico's recent approval of the acquisition.
12:32-
If land at the old mall is worth $300,000 per acre how come none has been sold and land at the Centre at Salisbury is on the market for much less.
Plus those appraisals were done several years ago. Just because an appraiser has a license doesn't mean they are any good (and some are lousy).
Why at 2:15 this afternoon has the Daily Times pulled the article from its website about the absurd action of the County Council yesterday?
anon2:26 Looks as if the Daily Times fouled when they printed the true cost to the taxpayer. It's not $1.5 mil it's $2.6 mil. seems they were swamped with comments.
5:09 --
please explain what the additional money -- 1.1 Million -- is for. Is this another "Slick Trick By Rick"?
5:34pm It's probably for lighting,
landscape, lining of the parking spaces, etc., and maybe some liability insurance when people park then and have to cross Glenn
Avenue to get to the Civic Center.
Next, they will want to close Glenn Avenue to traffic and make it a parking lot, too.
