Brooklyn Boy, 4, Is Killed By School Bus

A yeshiva’s school bus struck a 4-year-old boy in Borough Park, Brooklyn, on Wednesday morning, claiming his life, the authorities said.

The boy, Amrom Altman, had just left his house for school when he was struck by the yellow bus near the intersection of 13th Avenue and 49th Street around 8 a.m., the authorities said. There were no charges immediately filed against the bus operator, who was driving for Yeshiva Bais Chaim Yoshua.

Onlookers gathered on 49th Street between 13th and 14th Avenues, where the boy’s body lay in the street in front of his family’s three-story brick row house. Police officers streamed in and out of the house, and the street remained closed.
The boy’s grandparents arrived about 10 a.m, the grandmother stopping on the icy sidewalk and doubling over, heaving with sobs. The yellow bus had been moved to the corner, where police officers had boarded it and opened the hood to examine it.
A law enforcement official said that when the bus arrived, the boy and his 13-year-old brother were not outside waiting. The bus could not block traffic as it waited for them to emerge from the house, so it went around the block. When the bus arrived a second time, the driver still did not see the boy so he took off, not realizing that the boy was running toward the bus.

The boy apparently slipped on ice, according to witnesses, and was caught between the front and rear tires on the right side of the bus, the law enforcement official said. The older brother witnessed the accident. The driver did not realize what had happened and was flagged down by onlookers. He stopped the bus by the corner of 14th Avenue.

Buit it's OK for Fredericksen to send off all those kids to school with the conditions we had/have.

A 4 year-old should be at home in the first place, with his guardians. 4 is too young to send children to school!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Kid chokes to death while eating peanuts!"

OMG, we should immediately outlaw peanut sales at schools. Joe this is a sad story but a fluke accident. Don't try to use it as a way to justify your rants against the schools' decision.

@1:43 so are you asking for Joe to ignore all stories involving school busses and children getting hurt. This is a "NEWS" website, get over it!

The only comments that should be left here are prayers. This is so sad.

My thoughts will be first with the older bother and family. And yes, with the bus driver, which didn't sound like he did anything wrong.

I cannot imagine what I'd do if I accidentally hit someone and I've had close calls with kids who have run out in front of me.

This was my fear that something like that would happen in Wicomico County this week by children boarding the bus or the walkers who have to cross streets in traffic. I hope Dr. Frederickson remembers this story the next time he has to make a decision. The life of one innocent child is a high price to pay. This story makes me sick to my stomach thinking about everyone involved and the pain and guilt they must feel - from the 4 yr old child to the brother, the grandmother, the bus driver, the onlookers, the school officials, the snow removal people and the decision makers. My heart goes out to this family and community as tears stream down my face.
