Delmar's Redistricting

I have seen a lot of post about WCBOE redistricting ideas, but latest is absurd. Check out the front page of the Laurel Star or the link here http://www.laurelstar.com/index.cfm?ref=42578&ref2=241.

Delmar is proposing to send 5th graders from Delmar Elementary to Delmar Middle / High School. That means 5th through 12 graders will be at the same school. I personally don't want my 9/10 year old son or daughter with kids that old. Of course they will say they the middle schoolers are separated from older kids, but that is just unrealistic.

Why don't they just get rid of all the students who go to Delmar Elementary by using other people's address and lying about where they live. That would solve part of the problem, but WCBOE doesn't seem to want to listen to any of our ideas.OR even let us know about this latest CRAZY idea.

Isn't the elementary school run by Maryland and the middle/high run by Delaware? Is this their way of cutting the budget?

Kindergarten teachers at Delmar have 24 plus students each while kindergarten teachers at other schools have less than 20(my child is in a class of 26 at Delmar, my friend has a child in another school with 16). And the teachers make the same damn money! So many people are lying about their address so they can have their child go to Delmar. Hats off to the Delmar teachers and IMHO Delmar is hands down, the best district in this area and has been for years.Take a look at the back of the school, 14 or more portables, that is obsurd, I have taken a ride to other schools and have seen one or two maybe a few more but NOT 14!Send the kids to the damn school district relative to where they live period, or buy a house in the Delmar school District (like we did)and stop cheating the system, don't buy a house in the North Salisbury District(just using that school as an example) then take your kid to Delmar, there are plenty of homes for sale in Delmar! This one strikes a major nerve with my family!

I totally agree with you Joe. 5th graders have NO business at the Jr/Sr High School. They are NOT middle school students!
I had a problem with the 6th grade students being moved over too.
They are not totally separate and they ride the same buses as the older kids. Too much influence from the older kids too soon. This is why the lower grades have always been separate.
They've already had to build on to increase the space of the Delmar Jr/Sr High School AFTER building a brand new building! Where are they going to put these additional kids? If I was a Delmar, DE taxpayer, I would be up in arms about this because I'd bet they're coming at you with another request to build on to the school again which will increase your taxes AGAIN!
This idea is absurd!
I believe to alleviate the situation, maybe the State of Delaware should give the Delmar School District money to build an elementary school on the Delaware side of Delmar. I believe this may be the only realistic solution to the problem since this problem is only going to continue to grow, not go away.
With the amount of tax money Maryland collects there should be NO reason to have ANY portable buildings at ANY school! How many different taxes have been implemented in Maryland which they "said" were for education? MANY!
Every time a new tax is imposed and they say it's for education, it is not. It never makes it there. More lies from our elected officials!

I live in Delmar, Maryland. Not on the outskirts, not in West Salisbury, but Delmar. I am so glad my child attends Delmar Elementary. The problem that I am faced with is that IF the bi-state contract one day ends, and a Delaware Elementary school is built, then my child will be probably be forced to go to Wicomico High. I do NOT want this. I live less than a mile from the high school, and do not want my kids bussed to the next town to attend school.

10:16 I am in the same boat an totally agree!

There are horrorible people in the boe offices.

I gave the princple at Delmar the adress of two kids attending Delmar. They both live in the Prince St. District. He told me he would drive to their house and see if they were there. This was 2 months ago, they are still there. I did my job and nothing was done. These people are using realitives addresses to go there.

Delmar Maryland should have built an elementary school years ago.

Joe:

I assume you are referring to Special Permissions. The school and principal had the authority to not accept any requests if they are overcrowded. Why isn't this done? Probably because of public outcry.

Is an issue either way, either deny requests or come up with another solution like the one proposed.

The BOE just has to pick one of the fights. Since I assume it impacts you, you don't like it. If your grandchild was there on SP, you would fight that, right?

I say, if moving the 5th grade to Delmar HS saves money and eleviates overcrowding, do it!

for those of you who live in Delaware, get set because if the Laurel referendum is passed, all of Delaware will be paying for tearing down 4 schools and rebuilding brand new ones. DE is footing 75% of this monstrosity. Sad thing is, until they do better on the INSIDE, new buildings are not going to help.

Our schools are the center of our community here in Delmar. I hope that the overcrowding here will never cause a split between the states and an end to the bi-state agreement that makes our town so unique. I am proud to be a member of this special community and hope that this tradition will be around when my children enter into school.

As a side note.. would a new middle school be a better solution to the overcrowding for both the elementary and high school? This would also keep students of similar ages together as you were concerned with Joe.

I think it is a great idea. It gets your kids away from the Wicomico County BOE and into the Delmar DE School District sooner. The kids all ride the same buss now, so it wouldn't be much different. I am proud that my kid goes to Delmar and not Wi Hi and thrilled when I didn't have to deal with the Wicomico BOE anymore. It will be interesting to see how many teachers from Wicomico run over each other in order to get to the Delmar DE District to teach. The Wicomico budget is totally screwed and the public doesn't support the schools like Delmar does.

I have a lot of faith that Delmar Middle/Senior High's admin can keep the kids seperated as much as possible. If they wanted to send my 5th grader to Wi Middle or Bennett Middle, I would say no way. But, Delmar is a much better school, perfect no, but much better. I believe in 10 years that Delmar, DE will have its own elementary school.

Students have been going to the wrong school for years and our administration has allowed it to go on. Our schools would not be over crowded if we went to the school we were suppose to go to. My daughter is being effected based on students that do not belong in the school. This transfer is based on allergies or psychological effects of not being around friends. Two more years and my kid is done. Thank God

I can't wait to apply for a 5th grade position at DMSHS and get out of the WCBOE. I'd rather teach in Delmar, rather than Little Baltimore any day.

I have a question...if this plan goes through, who pays for the teacher's salaries? Does Delaware now pick them up? Just a thought?

If the teachers go, then yes, Delaware will pay their salaries. They will no longer be employees of the WCBOE, nor will be they remain in the Maryland retirement system.
