Delaware State Police have arrested three men for their involvement in a home invasion that occurred outside of Smyrna.

The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. on the Wednesday when Volkert knocked on the door of a 69 year-old male. When the male victim answered the door Volkert asked the victim to help him look for his dog. The victim felt uncomfortable with the request and told Volkert that he would not help. Volkert returned to the victim’s home several minutes later and asked the victim if he could barrow a flashlight. The victim then advised Volkert to get off his property. Later in the early morning at approximately 3:20 a.m. the victim heard banging. When the victim checked on the locked door and saw two subjects getting ready to enter the home. The victim grabbed a bat and began yelling. The subjects fled the scene.

The victim was able to give police a description of the fleeing vehicle. At approximately 4 a.m. Clayton Police observed a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved and stopped the car in Clayton.

The three suspects were taken into custody and police found evidence in the car linking them to the home invasion.

The three were charged with attempted robbery, conspiracy and wearing a disguise during a felony.
Troopers believe the motivation for the attempted robbery was to take the victim’s medication.
