Kansas Fears Getting Gitmo Inmates

Kansas City Star

If not Guantanamo, then where? Anything but a welcoming party is forming here.

When President Barack Obama signed an order Thursday forcing the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year, he put in sharp relief the possibility that some of the world's most potentially dangerous terror suspects could be hauled to Kansas.

The U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth is on a list of imperfect choices for holding scores of men whose legal status is as murky as their backgrounds.

Obama's long-promised action only heightened chances that Leavenworth could be the new focus for a contentious debate over how to prosecute noncitizens for alleged actions overseas, and whether their legal limbo has a foreseeable end.

"We're a military community and people understand that we need to do what the commander in chief says," said Andrea Adkins, Leavenworth's economic development administrator. "But there is a security threat anyplace where these people are located."

Kansas politicians and local government officials have complained loudly about the possibility of America's most troublesome captives being brought to the Midwest. Opponents' arguments center on security -- both that the military prison might not be equipped for such high-risk inmates, and that the fort and the community might be targeted by terrorists.

"This is just not going to happen on our watch," said U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican.

U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, said he had been told by officials from Muslim countries that they would no longer send officers to the Army Command and General Staff College if the detainees came to Fort Leavenworth.

"We've already heard from students from Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia that they will leave, or be pulled by their governments, if the detainees from Guantanamo are moved there," Brownback said. "It's where these relationships are built with foreign officers, particularly in the Islamic world. This really hurts us."

How can we imprison persons in this country that have committed no crime here? This sets a dangerous precedent, or will allow these terrorists to simply walk out as soon as they get here. In Gitmo, they were treated like the soldiers in a war that they are. You could say that they were treated badly if you feel that way, but they aren't criminals- they are soldiers imprisoned at a military base.

That will change for some of them real soon, watch.

They may be a lot of things, but they are not soldiers. They do not wear uniforms, they only terrorize. Kill them in Gitmo or they will return to the battlefield and kill more of our soldiers.

Thats probably how they will get it all into criminal court, they will charge them as terrorist not as soldiers.

They can't be held anywhere except a federal facility, where that would be I don't know. I wish they wouldn't even consider bringing them on American soil. If they put them in Super Max in Colorado all they are doing is putting them all together with the rest of the terrorist. That place is becoming a compound for terrorist.

I seen on the fox network that the illinios Govenor,Gov.Bloggo, is now being told he cannot question those that are accusing him of the crimes he "alledgedly" has committed.

He is being denied the constitutional right to face his acusers in a court of law.

Now we are going to move the guys out of cuba and bring them here and grant them more rights than a Governor of our leagle system is being granted? How ironic.

Now that Aga Obama has been sworn in and the need for the "Bloggo smoke screen" is no longer needed , the Congress is going to find a way for Bloggo to walk.

Im no democrat, that much is for sure. It just seems a little too coincidental that they are creating a way out for Bloggo.

And now it has been said on FoxNews that the Obama handout is going to be distributed according to the color of ones skin!

Here it comes folks! No white skilled construction workers are ellegible for the hand outs!

I thought Obama was going to end Minority so that we could be united.

Why would they pull their people when the whole goal is to get these people on American soil and sort them all out? They need to be either tried and sentenced for their crimes, Held until the end of terrorism(let's make that clear to them) or found innocent and sent home.(yeahright) Situation doesn't change, only the location. Let them know where they are being kept, too, so when they try the breakout attack we can get more of them to the cemetery.

How about sending them to Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, Alaska?

Just build a POW barracks on the base. Bingo, no problem.

That's what I heard on Fox news, the worst ones are going to a super max prison in Colorado.

They had Gov. Bloggo's phone taped and he was caught, flat out busted. The Illnois state legislature impeached him.

I'm most sure Obama will stay out of that and let the justice system do their eh job? Let's hope.

If the government says they are terrorists, that is good enough for me. If they say my neighbor is a criminal that is good enough for me. We don't need to be holding court trying to protect criminals' freedoms and rights. Our government gets everything right and never lies. That is good enough for me.
