The mayor of Syracuse is drawing criticism after appointing a member of the Nation of Islam to fill an opening on the school board, but the follower of firebrand minister Louis Farrakhan vowed to help the community tackle "the whole problem of race."
Mark Muhammad, 54, an assistant professor at nearby Onondaga Community College and adjunct professor at Syracuse University, was tapped by Mayor Stephanie Miner to fill the last nine months of a term won by a board member who moved out of the city. Muhammad is the city’s local representative for the often controversial offshoot of Islam, led by Farrakhan, who has a long history of making anti-Semitic and racist statements.
"Mark is a positive influence on our community and has been for many years,'' Miner said in a prepared statement. "I am confident he will go on to do good work for the children and families of the school district."

Freedom of religion
Here is the real issue everyone is missing, Islam is not a race it's a religion. Color of the person is technically irrelevant. This appointment is one of religion in a public school. This appointment is going to inject religious views and opinion in a public school which is illegal and should be nullified on this point. If our children are not to learn Christian, Jewish or any other religious beliefs than they should not be forced to learn Islam in a public school.

What makes you think because he is a Muslim he is going to push his Religion on others . This Nation has push Christianity down throats of its people since it started, however I know there many people of different faiths that don't go to School to teach Religion. You thinking is way off the man was hired to do a job not to teach what his religion is.

I have never known of a true Christian to push religion on anyone in my life. I come from a Roman Catholic upbringing. My Mother lived her life for God and spent most of it "Paying It Forward" to give back. While Mom was extremely religious, she never shoved it down our throats, or others. In fact, (may she rest in peace) if you had met her, you'd never know she was so religious.
There are some on here who just hate religion. How sad. Religion is a CHOICE.
Then there are others who believe all Muslims are bad people. Look, there's a massive difference when it comes to Muslims and RADICAL Muslims. I have a friend who's wife is Muslim. One of the sweetest, honest and caring people I know. The Media should put RADICAL in front of Muslim when it comes to anything violent. Yes, we too publish what has been put out there because we do not altar anything we get from other sources.
