ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Comptroller Peter Franchot is scheduled to announce results of a petition drive gauging support for starting Maryland public schools after Labor Day.
Franchot is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday with Gov.-elect Larry Hogan, state Sen. James Mathias and Ocean City Mayor Richard Meehan.
A state task force recommended in May that schools delay opening until after Labor Day, while continuing to end by the current time in mid-June. The task force voted 11-4 in favor of the later start date.

They should utilize technology and let students with good grades opt to learn from home across the internet a few day a week.
This is stupid and only being done to help Ocean City. Local school boards should be allowed to set their own calendar without bureaucratic interference. Everyone does not have to be the same.
I say if this passes, they also need to end my Memorial Day.
Not only good for OC, but for families and the state economy in general. This will extend the summer vacation possibilities by at least a weekend and longer every year, eliminating the isolation and not exactly ideal usefulness that the workers' holiday experiences every year.
Adjustments can be made to accommodate with other holiday vacation periods, along with working on last class day dates.
Ending on Memorial Day? Hmmm. That could take some serious squeezing.
Ending by Memorial Day would work if some of the "Professional" Days were removed.
And some of those lame half days that count as full days. What a waste of everyone's time those are - nothing gets done but head counts and tidying up.
Switch to year round school with nice vacations spread throughout the year.
This will not add more time for summer vacations and could hurt our local kids from getting jobs. Will mean that my kids will get out in mid June of they are lucky. Add snow days in and could be near the end of June.
My kids could lose out on a good job if OC employers had to wait form them to be done till July.
2 sides to everything.
12:32, I have been saying that for years and years. No one here listens.
Taking a week off the start of the year will put a week on at the end of the year at the beginning of the summer. Same amount of time in school. Only this gives us one less week to prepare students for the massive tests in may. An extra week after the tests is a waste of time. What we should really do is start earlier and end school after the tests in may. It may help.
