Massive Roadblock, Warrantless Searches in Maryland

Yesterday was the ATF raiding Ares Arms in California.

What never got reported was Tuesday's massive highway roadblock and car to car searches by armed law enforcement officers in Maryland. Were there warrants for these searches? No. Was there reasonable cause to stopevery commuter at 10a.m. on a Tuesday morning? No.

"When I saw a wall of police officers with automatic weapons approaching our cars, it was apparent that something serious was taking place," one commuter told local media.

Rockville city, Montgomery County, and Maryland State Police blocked both lanes of Interstate 270 with more than 30 police vehicles, numerous dogs, helicopters, and officers going to car to car with weapons drawn as seen here:

Wow, really? Is this true? For $7000? We have never solved crimes like this in the past.

Getting to the point where I am afraid to leave the house.

Citizens call upon citizens to identify these officers and punish them.
If they want to violate the rights of citizens then the citizens will take away their ability to do so.
Obviously they have no respect for the rule of law, so why should the citizens they are sworn to protect? (from the very crimes they are themselves commiting)
If this happens to me I will do whats necessary to survive it, then seek the proper remediation at a later time with laser like focus and swift legal retribution. They won't even know what hit them.

There was a bank robbery. They were looking for a specific vehicle. The vehicle was found in the shut down traffic and the suspects were taken into custody. Traffic resumed shortly after.

Excellent work by local LE for catching the robbery suspects. Thank you for what you do and I'm sorry how the awful media treats you day in and day out.

Anonymous 857 pm, thank you for actually taking the time to identify the reason for the roadblock, before running your mouth and making stupid threats as others will do. I'm glad to know that their is another intelligent soul out there.

For all the haters out there making threats: What should have done better? Your obviously experts in law enforcement investigations, tactics, and constitutional law so please educate us. The cops caught the three suspects and recovered the stolen money. Would it have been better to let them escape even though they knew the suspect vehicle and their approximate location? Had the suspects escaped, surely they would have been happy with their stolen $7000...or would their success and escape make them more confident and encourage them to continue their little crime spree, terrorizing even more people, stealing more money, and the potential for more future manhunts and high speed chases.

Since so many of you are hindsight experts and know more than these officers and troopers, please do your community a favor and join us, teach us, train us and make us better. Joe - you should run for Sheriff. You obviously dislike Law Enforcement (thats why you post all of these stories} and how they do things. Please make us better cops with your wisdom and experience.

If you run for Sheriff, I'll be the first to join your election committee.

Since you want to play the what if game, what if the bank robbers made a break for it?

What if they carjacked another car? Or 3 other cars? What if they stood behind an innocent persons' vehicle and started a shoot out? What if someone had a panic attack or something of that nature? What if they got out of their vehicle and would not get back in it?

What if no bank robbers were caught? What if..... this could go on forever.

This action was a bit extreme for ANY amount of money, much less only $7,000. And usually that is insured regardless.

I would bet you were not one of the ones who had a shotgun pointed at your head while being shouted at were you?

The bank robbery happened at the Wells Fargo Bank on King Farm Boulevard in the King Farm subdivision in Rockville Maryland.

The back way out of King Farm leads directly to MD I-270 entrance ramps.

Maryland State Police and Montgomery County Police simply blocked the escape route of least resistance and apprehended the preps.

These type tactics were used successfully quite often back in the 1940's and 50s.

The Jack Webb produced radio and television plays got their title from the name used to describe the tactic used, "Dragnet".

There are two obvious problems here. The first is that the police actually missed the vehicle while doing vehicle by vehicle searches. Helicopter spotted it after cops missed it. The second problem is that the police DO NOT have the rights to search the trunk of every vehicle on the road just because they are looking for 3 suspects in a Kia. Fourth Amendment protects against illegal searches. If there is a robbery in your neighborhood, i guess you and your neighbors would be ok with the police going house by house and entering/searching every house whether you are there or not.

9:59 Exactly who was terrorizing who here?
I'd say the uniformed mercenaries were terrorizing the public as well as putting innocents in greater danger! And the tactic was a failure anyway!
They were not apprehended during the constitutional breech!
But you wouldn't see that being the trained mercenary you are.

If it had ended in a blazing gun battle.....how would they answer this question then? Thankfully the bad guys were so stupid and cowards.

Anyone who thinks this is OK should have their head examined. Over the past few years, a different attitude is coming from law enforcement personnel.
It is no longer protect and serve.
It is enforcement and they seem to thoroughly
enjoy their job. The police state is here.

9:59, Is that how you guys work. Just because we publish articles that may not put Police in the spotlight YOU want to be in, I'm a Cop Hater?

You are nothing short of a BULLY. First, you hide behind anonymous and seem to smack down people who disagree with you.

While you have every right to your opinion, man up face to face with me and we can discuss my feelings about Law Enforcement. Until then, don't put words in my mouth.

Anon 959 here. If I posted my name on here then some of the wackos making threats to cops might want to visit my house and take shots at or threaten my family members because that does happen occasionally. I'm certainly no bully. I've been a cop for over a decade and I always try to be as polite and professional to everyone I meet. I take a lot of pride in my position as a servant to the community and try damn hard to be a protector as well. I will be the first to admit that I'm not perfect but everyday that I work I try to be perfect to the people that I come into contact with. Because I want people to remember me and see that not everybody in law enforcement is an a$$hole.
How did I smack down anybody that disagreed with my opinion? Its easy for people to come on this blog and armchair quarterback everything law enforcement does, but how many of these experts have any LE experience or knowledge? I asked what should the cops have done differently and nobody gave an educated response to my question. One person threw up a bunch of what if scenarios regarding shootouts and hostage situations regarding this incident and how these could have gone much worse. Well by that logic wouldn't it have also been bad if that cops didn't block the road, didn't search cars, and let the suspects get away to continue their criminal activities which could also include a high speed chase, hostages, or a deadly shoot out. My point is they had a lot of manpower there, they had the suspects boxed in and a general idea of the suspects and suspect vehicle. They caught the suspects and now they're in jail. Mission accomplished, nobody got hurt, bad guys lost and hood guys won - to me that's the most important aspect. Everybody keeps complaining about how bad crime is and how dangerous this area is yet everybody bitches and complains about everything we do to try and make the world a safer place. Joe you are huge Marine Corps/armed forces supporter and I truly appreciate that. Keep in mind that a very large portion of law enforcement is former military, particularly the Marine Corps. So how do we go from being great Americans that deserve love, praise, and support to blood thirsty, Nazi uniform wearing, murderers? Same men and women, same love of our community in our hearts, same desire to make the world a safer place but now we don't do anything right. If you truly feel that the current state of law enforcement is that bad do something about. Join us, train us, educate us and help make us better. Bitching about us, making threats about killing the next cop that tries to stop you, etc, is just gonna make things worse. You all can say you're not cop haters all you want but for the majority of you, your words speak volumes about you. I don't really have a problem with somebody making a legitimate complaint, but please don't stop there. Come up with solutions or alternative ways that things could have been done better. Maybe the right law enforcement supervisor will read your comment and take it to heart and actually implement your idea. And I'll believe your not a cop hater when I see real positive law enforcement stories gracing your blog. A website called Police One shares plenty of positive stories that you COULD share here if you wanted. Its not all just pro-police propaganda either. When there are brothers and sisters out there doing dumb or illegal things they run those stories too. I'll jump down off my soapbox now. Joe if you truly want to meet me one on one I may take you up on that but not in a manner that exposes my family to any kind of harm and putting my name on here would do that.

9:59 There are some of us that respect the police AND respect the constitution. To use as few words as possible, you should not use a bunker bomb to swat a fly. Taking away our 4th amendment rights to make us "safer" is no excuse. The police need to work smarter and make respect of the constitution a high priority in the pursuit of justice. Use of the helicopter in coordination with troopers on the ground could have been employed in a less heavy-handed approach. I respect what the police do and know they have a tough job these days. Police enforcement was my second career choice and I participated in the MD state police ride-along program for long enough to gain respect for the job.

9:50 you are the problem! and sooner or later you will realize you chose poorly! never go against the citizens! everyone of you have already done so by putting on that uniform and bowing to your masters! You think the average citizen could not find out who you really are? what a fool! Good luck with all that! But then again intelligence is not rated as one of the higher qualities one needs to be a Kop!

and by the way 9:59 didn't the bank have cameras? If the government found the boston bombers without putting every one else in danger I'm sure it would have been only a matter of time before the feds would have closed this case. but then you guys wouldn't have gotten the chance to play Rambo!

The scenarios you refer to were an answer to another persons 'what if' statement.

What if the cops didn't shut down the highway and terrorize the commuters? More than likely they would have caught them later after some police WORK.

Everyone was lucky THIS time. Don't do that crap again.

You either support the whole Constitution or you don't support the Constitution it doesn't go both ways, pal. And, violating the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution repeatedly tells us all that you [cops] have dishonored yourselves, your country and the oath you swore as a LEO.

Unknown said...

Any Apologist who supports what was done out on 270, meaning Warrantless Car-to-Car Searches AT GUNPOINT (remember that most), does not deserve the constitutional rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Are Banks an invention of the twenty first century? Are automobiles? Name a precedent case where police can stop every vehicle and demand the drivers stay put for 45-minutes, even after being subject to a search. Multiple witnesses verified to news media what happened... and at least two law enforcement officers.

Always enjoy listening to LEO's hide behind this phantom duty to "protect" the public when the Supreme Court has already obliterated that myth. LEO's have no duty to protect anyone.
