Information From WCBOE On Making Up 8 Weather Closing Days

Information on Making Up 8 Weather Closing Days (Jan. 21-23 and 29-30, and March 3-4 and 17)

Wicomico County Public Schools have now been closed eight days this year due to inclement weather: Jan. 21-23 and 29-30, and March 3-4 and 17. School officials will continue to consider all makeup options, but no final decision is likely to be made before early April.

At this time, Wicomico School System families should expect the school year to be extended by five days in June to make up five of the winter weather closing days. The school year had been scheduled to end Friday, June 6, but it will now likely end on Friday, June 13, with early dismissal on June 11, 12 and 13.

Wicomico’s plans for making up the eight days could be affected by a state waiver of some makeup days. The State Superintendent of Schools will receive waiver requests from school systems, but will not make any decisions on those requests before the end of March, when the likelihood of winter weather has mostly passed. Wicomico schools and school families will be informed once any further decisions are made – either at the state or Board level – on makeup days.

Since late January, a number of methods for making up the weather closing days have been considered and discussed with parents and teachers. It makes the most instructional sense to add five of those days on to the end of the year, said Dr. John Fredericksen, Superintendent of Schools. The approved 2013-2014 calendar for Wicomico Schools states that additional makeup days may be added at year’s end if needed.

I sure hope if the days are waived, they consider reducing the teachers salary by that many days. If you don't work it, you don't get paid!

how dare you make that statement. I take a lot of school work home and work beyond the regular school day. I should be paid year round like every teacher has for decades.

Why are they even worried about this? Don't they have a lunch, and spending Old Navy gift cards to worry about? Some people.

It must be common core math.

Just add an hour to the school days starting NOW, and waive any remainder. This keeps everybody's vacation schedules intact.

We don't even need to add hours. Wicomico County already has the most hours per year of any school district in the state. We go 30 minutes longer than any other district. Even without adding a day, I'm pretty sure Wicomico County would still meet the minimum hours required for a school year.

So 3 months off in the summer doesn't cover the little extra time you signed up for? The taxpayer pension doesn't cover the little extra time you spend? the taxpayer insurance for your family doesn't cover the little extra time you spend?

Take one day off spring break and take the professional day at the end of March, as the calendar states can be done. Why include those days as possibilities if they're not being considered?

Aww... Truth hurts. You are pitiful. I can't stand teachers. HOW DARE YOU! You get nearly 3 months off during the Summer and 10 professional days. The average worker in Wicomico County does not get 10 paid professional days not to mention holidays and annual days. How Dare You!!

I've said that already, they are not listening.

Only on the Eastern Shore will you find people bellyaching about their kids making up snow days. You people are a different breed of stupid, you know that?

To all the teachers out there keep grinding. The general public and business world have short memories and always want to cry about our "summer vacations". Remember you can never win an argument with a fool! Thanks for your dedication and sacrifice!!!

Teachers go to school until the middle of June and return for a week of in service the middle of August. That is not three months. It is two.

May I be so bold as to ask what was censorable about the 'troll' comment?

I personally did not see the comment so I can't tell you why. Sorry

I see. It was quite innocuous I'll assure you.
It just makes it difficult to genuinely comment when you're never quite certain what may be censored and for what infraction.

if you think it is so easy to be a teacher go back to school and then get your master's degree and teach. you all are so jealous please try to control yourself. We know you could never cut it as a teacher

I work in the schools and I am not a teacher.....but these teachers deserve combat pay for all they have to put up with. It is not an easy job these days. Now, having said that, I do think the professional days are excessive (they all have planning periods each day) and some could be used for makeup days, AND to add an hour to end of each school day would also make sense. Going further in summer messing up peoples vacation and some schools are not air conditioned, is really difficult. Even though I am sure there are people who have made plans for spring break that should also be an option. Take two of those days. Dr Fredrickson are you listening to what parents want ? Please don't make the school year longer.

Next year don't have so many wasted professional days. I don't care if school runs through 4th of July. I planned my vacation for June 6th and have paid for the stay and airline tickets. My children will be on vacation the last 5 days of school. They do not do anything after Memorial Day anyway.
