Wicomico County - January 2014 Workforce Data Just In - Shows Wicomico Gained 20 Jobs
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics just released the January 2014 Labor Force Data for Wicomico County. According to their latest report, Wicomico finally turned a positive number after experiencing 12 consecutive months of job losses (+20) - see spreadsheet below. However, the unemployment rate spiked to 8.6% from Decembers 7.9% rate. The latest jobs number represents a 'sigh of relief' considering that the December 2013 workforce jobs number was the largest workforce loss on record (-1,863 jobs compared to December 2012). The 20 jobs gained is still very minuscule when one takes into account that the local area population is increasing by approximately 1000 residents per year.

This is still a pathetic jobs number. But at least it isn't another loss.
Wait till the end of this month when JC Penny's closes its doors.
Better than negative. Other than that what else can I say.
Happy Days are here again!
Hmmmm, let's see, Twenty new jobs created back in January, yet Unemployment skyrockets. Again, we'll remind you. ONE HUNDRED, (or so) people per month are moving into the County.
You TRY to do the math.
2 plus 2 does not make 4 in this report. Could somebody have made a small error somewhere?? Look for a correction later on.
Why would anyone move into Wicomico county?
5:11, Well, if your spouse is in ECI, Salisbury is the cheapest place around to pick up a piece of crap rental unit close enough to your "thug" in Jail.
Then there's the Section 8, Subsidized and Affordable Housing Units all throughout the City. More so than ANYWHERE else in the state.
Open your eyes, Salisbury is filling up with BOTTOM FEEDERS and people like Mayor Jim Ireton can stand in front of these people and be their Ruler without many of them ever thinking of challenging him or his ways.
They won't come to Council Meetings and they won't stand up for their rights as long as their rent is below $300.00 a month, they can achieve food stamps, welfare and an Obama phone.
Salisbury and Wicomico County Maryland is, after all, DA BURY. The New America.
Thanks for the explanation. My eyes are open but only seeing sun and palm trees in S. FL. I bailed on Wicomico Co. a few years ago to enjoy no state income tax and not shoveling snow. It is sad that what was once a beautiful place to grow up and live has become one big slum.
Jeez if it is so apocalyptic here, why don't you leave? OH WAIT you did.
20 new jobs doesn't put a dent in the damage that has been done to our local economy. It hardly represents a pimple. We need some big things to happen and fast.
Joe - I can see your point. 20 new jobs pales in comparison to the influx of new residents. Job generation is simply not keeping pace with our population growth.
You want to know what I think, I believe the slight uptick in workforce numbers has more to do with the extension of unemployment running out. People are now being forced to go out and to try and find a job.
I too left the shore for SWFl last July. 5:43 you forgot to mention all of the new jobs, arts, progress, and ect!!!! Hey I hear you folks are looking for more snow this week lol....HERTZ just broke ground for their new headquarters almost 1000 new jobs.... The shore no progress, no people, no industry, arts, not much of anything sadly.... 20 new jobs... Sad
745, that sadly, is your typical narrow minded illogical mentality, that defines Smallsbury.
You are too stupid to be commenting. There are no jobs in the county to be had. Unemployment or not.
So to put it in terms you may understand, no unemployment means that your neighbors are most likely now going into foreclosure or eviction and leaving your neighborhood in blight.
Simple small minded idiots like you disgust me.
5:34 is that all you got to say? Ever single article you comment on, you contribute nothing other than you moved to florida.
Sorry I can't give you a medal for it. Say something useful or move. No one cares.
So, we're losing Famous Dave's, and Quizno's South just rolled up their carpet, so there goes those 20 jobs in just a week! Just drive around town and the newly vacant businesses are everywhere!
You all crack me up thinking Salisbury can be saved.... Not gonna happen.... Those of us who were smart enough to see the writing on the wall and leave continue to post comments because the truth is the world outside Delmarva isn't as bad as some of you would like to believe. Trying to show you all what Delmarva needs and why it won't happen.
4:23AM
Are you getting up so early to go to work for someone else and trying to figure out that your taxes are going up, property values are going down and that businesses are closing every week? Keep holding on to those good ole eastern shore theories that god will provide and a country boy can survive.
These stats just goes to prove that Wicomico has a lot of trailer park trash type people in the community. Our county has become more like a low life community.
