Perdue should be paying for this lawsuit and not begging for money for it from the public. Everyone raises holy hell when they hear of someone on welfare but what about all the Perdue workers who are on govenment assistance because of the low wages they are paid and the company is making hugh profits off the back of the middle class taxpayers. I bet it's near 70% of those employed by Perdue who work for below poverty level wages.
There is nothing great about these chicken companies who have made hugh profits off the backs of workers and bring the community to the blight it's in.
Not too mention all the government subsities the companies get. Corporate welfare at it's best. It's not just the big banks.
Perdue is not asking for money. The proceeds go to Mr. and Mrs. Hudson. This fight has surely about broke them. Unlike the waterkeepers who are having their legal exspenses taken care of by our tax money. Thanks to UMD Law clinic. Know what you're talking about before you post!
Perdue had no involvement in the incident. The Hudsons are being sued because of a pile of biosolids from the Ocean City wastewater plant. Perdue was named in the suit only because the waterkeepers think Perdue has deep pockets.
Read the online court docs 11:25. Biosolids have been out of the picture for a long time.
Also be sure and read how Perdue had the Hudson farm classified as one of it's worst growers way before the lawsuit even.
Perdue fought hard to keep these docs from being made public.
I'm a devout conservative and believe in big business but not big agribusiness that thrives off of paying low wages thereby bringing communities down with these low paying jobs while pocketing hugh profits. Plus most of their products aren't fit for dogs to eat with all the chemicals added.
Perdue, Tyson, Mountaire are poster boys for corporate welfare.
Whether you agree with the practices of poultry companies or not, the fact remains that the Hudson's are being sued by a well funded, out of state environmental group for an agricultural practice approved by the Maryland Dept. of Environment. Legal bills threaten to bankrupt this family farm before a court can even rule. Is this the precedent we want to set? Every farmer in the state is at risk of being blackmailed to bankruptcy by our own taxpayer dollar. The Hudson's deserve our support as the very foundation of American agriculture is at risk.
The sound you hear is my screaming! You are all mis- or ill-informed in much of what you say.
Contract growers like the Hudson's are not by anyone's stretch of the imagination the "very foundation of American agriculture."
These companies have ruined the foundation of American agriculture by their practices which includes dictating to the farmers every step of the food growing process.
Somewhere in Virginia they've run out the big chicken company and the growers opened up their own independant processing plant as a co op sort of thing. It's working out beautifully. The farmers have more control and the product put out is superior to that of 'mass produce' chickens.
It's turned out to be more economical in the long run and a benefit to the community as more money is spread out to the growers and therefore the community has prospered more as they've elimiated the big company "middle man."
No jobs were lost as they now work for the independant processing plant.
I wish we had such a processing plant around here, which would give the farmers a choice whether to be under a contract or not.
somewhere I read Perdue exporting to China or some Asian country. I thought that's great-they are creating a toxic waste dump out of our land to feed the rest of the world. I have sympathy for starving people, but it's time we quit worrying about everyone else. I'm not sure it's connected but the cancer rates here are high and so is the poverty levels. We need jobs, but not these types created by chicken companies which only pay minimum wage. It does bring the whole economy down.
I heard at the seminar at Salibury State that there is a brand new processing plant waiting to be opened in Princess Anne for a few years now. What's the hold up? Is there someone preventing them from opening? The politicans should be looking into this.
This never gets any publicity and it would do the local farmers good.
I know that all the farms and Perdue have fed a lot of people!
