STATE POLICE CRIME LAB TO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – The Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division Laboratory will be awarded the highest level of accreditation given by an international crime laboratory accrediting organization. The lab is the first full-service state or local, non-federal crime lab in Maryland to receive this level of certification.

The Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division Laboratory is an important part of public safety efforts across the state. Last year, the lab received evidence from almost 19,000 criminal cases to process in the forensic fields of biology, toxicology, trace evidence, latent print/impressions, drug analysis, and firearms/tool marks.

About 68 percent of the analyses requested came from local law enforcement agencies. The full-service Maryland State Police lab will accept casework for analysis from any Maryland law enforcement agency. The lab also houses Maryland’s DNA database and is the state level access point to the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
