What's your opinion of a proposal that would tax drivers by the mileage they travel, instead of tacking it on to the price at the pump?

You will screw the guy who bought the fuel efficient car. Taxing by the gallon takes care of this isue.
that is a progressive tax meant to PUNISH drivers who live NOT in the city (IE: NOT In the CRIME Areas and NOT in the areas that pay CITY TAXES)
it is a SHAM. we already have a tax by the mile, it is the tax at pump on each GALLON of gas. for the miles you go, you buy gallons, all it is going to do is be a 2nd tax on mileage.
what would be the positives of this???????????????? NONE. SAY NO to ANY MORE TAXES.

A $/gal tax seems more equitable. A mileage tax means a scooter pays the same rate for road repairs as a heavy duty pick up hauling a heavily loaded large trailer.
so the current tax on gas will decrease at the pump?
and no one will disconnect thier odometer?
will big brother require a gps in my car?
This has just about put me over the edge.
I have read some radical comments on this blog , but now it's my turn.
The only way out of this government control is to overthrow it. I will be praying everyday for a civil war.
Those who drive more miles are already taxed more at the pump, by virtue of their increased consumption. They are also taxed more by increased maintenance costs on their cars (ie, parts).
This proposal, at best, would make up for the lower taxes generated by a more efficient US fleet of vehicles. But create a reporting nightmare for everybody at the same time.
I think it is like most government ideas to fix problems, DUMB!!!
Pump tax and mileage tax should both be abandoned, we are taxed enough and at evert turn.
I'm just waiting for taxes to be applied to air, dirt, clouds, the moon, sun and the solar system... How dare they do what they do for free...

They (the government) wants more money, but they have a much larger purpose and intent --- being able to track EVERY SINGLE CAR AND DRIVER in the USA. Anytime. All the time. THATS the REAL purpose. And now, we are all caught up in the debate over "taxes". Just as they would like it....1:47, welcome to the club. You are opening your eyes to the truth. The ONLY way to fix our country is to forcibly remove these leeches and scum. And they know it, too.

We need a Stupid Tax that applies to people who dream up schemes like this. During elections, you could look up how much stupid tax a candidate paid. Vote out stupid people would be so much easier.

Mileage Tax is better. It's easier for me to roll back my odometer than to find untaxed fuel.
Time to move to Texas. I want to be there when they secede. Takin my guns with me. They are not afraid to use them there! Civil war is coming soon. We can only take so much!
People will roll back their odometers to avoid the tax; those who have to drive many miles to get to and from work to a job that barely pays the bills will be hit really hard by such an approach; those who live in rural areas probably drive more miles and will be hit disproportionately harder by such a tax; those who live in urban areas & use public transportation (a big recipient of tax monies, including gas taxes) will continue to get "a free ride" on heavily taxpayer-subsidized mass transit. Such an approach simply puts a heavier burden on those who already pay most of the bills of government. Think about what such a change would do to the trucking industry, an industry that moves most of the goods that we all consume. Think about all the prices that will have to be raised to pay for this and think about how much more we will ALL have to pay for everything brought to the Shore by gas powered vehicles. If you sit at home on your butt or use mass transit to get around, this probably seems like a great idea because you don't think you have a horse in the race, but when you start paying more for everything you buy, you may begin to feel differently. Nearly everything government does has negastive unintended consequences. Another good reason for small government.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Next thing you know, they will be eying our grocery bills and taxing us on how much we buy at the store. As long as there are material items, there will be a tax recommended for it.

So people with subways like NYC, Boston, etc... wouldn't be taxed? And why would we punish people who have went "green"? I thought that was what Obama wanted- he's the one pushing higher fuel efficiency in cars- so now we are going to punish the people that actually buy in?
Maybe not an increase in taxes, but as a NEW tax, I fail to see the difference. NO NEW TAXES!
I don't believe you can roll back the mileage on the digital odometers. Maybe disconnect the speedometer altogether thus increasing the chance for speeding tickets.
Also, I wonder if the deductions claimed for business/medical/charity mileage on income taxes would be decreased at this point?
8:46 It's just another computer. It can be hacked into and manipulated by anyone with the knowledge and the equipment. "Roll back" is just an expression that most people will understand. True enough, most people don't have the skills to do this, but I'll bet a new market would soon open up for those who do. Entrepreneurial criminals, of course.
