School Superintendent Gives Up $800K In Pay

(CBS/AP)

Some people give back to their community. Then there's Fresno County School Superintendent Larry Powell, who's really giving back. As in $800,000 -- what would have been his compensation for the next three years.

Until his term expires in 2015, Powell will run 325 schools and 35 school districts with 195,000 students, all for less than a starting California teacher earns.

"How much do we need to keep accumulating?" asks Powell, 63. "There's no reason for me to keep stockpiling money."

Larry Powell is a LEADER! Leading by example in tough economic times. Maybe he should be given a ticket to Wicomico County and take Pollitt's place. Pollitt just doesn't get it. His decisions this past weekend cost us dearly for what was a huge response to what everyone with a brain knew was going to be next to nothing! Except the idiots in Wicomico leadership (I use that word to describe their positions and not what they do).

Maybe the guilt finally got to him. 800K ? Really?

Fresno County ? 800K is like 75K to them. I would have thought the Superintendent would have made more then that.

800k over three years... About $267k per year. Not sure what the cost of living is over. There but you can believe it's higher. This guy is seriously leading by example and we need more like him. His comment is spot on too... Why does he (or anyone) need to stockpile money if they are living well without worry (even if they go years without pay).

He's showing that in this economy the rich can give back a little more without going broke or even breaking a sweat... Just sayin
