Eastern Shore Hospital Settles Federal Claims It Failed To Prevent Unnecessary Stent Procedures

Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury has agreed to pay $2.8 million to settle federal claims it failed to prevent cardiologist John R. McLean from placing medically unnecessary stents in dozens of patients between 2003 and 2006, the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.

McLean was convicted last month in U.S. District Court of health care fraud and related charges for falsifying patient records to make it appear they needed coronary stents, then billing private and public insurers hundreds of thousands of dollars for the unwarranted procedures. He faces a maximum of 35 years in prison at his sentencing, set for Nov. 10.

I would hope to see some top level employees being reprimanded or even fired for this.

PRMC is a money-grubbing disgraceful excuse for a hospital. They do the entire shore an injustice just by calling themselves a hospital.

he wasn't the only cardiologist performing unecessary procedures.

This all happened because of a disease that MOST Doctors have and it is called GREED!!!

I certainly hope that money is going to be divided among those poor souls that have the stents!

if you can possibly use another hospital use it. atlantic or john's hopkins comes to mind. i last used john's hopkins and they were wonderful. by the way this suggestion comes from a lot of experience with prmc. (hopefully no more).

934 what an absurd assertion. Every profession has corrupt members-lawyers,bankers,politicians, school teachers,,preachers--you make a ridiculous claim. But please, by all means promote the shortage of doctors by disparaging them--you will be the first whining and complaining when you can no longer find a doctor to treat you. Doctors don't get paid enough to take care of people like YOU.

Yes there are many corrupt people in this society I do agree. As a person working in the medical field these DRS. do make more money then you think. They will charge extra on bills and do not think they are your best friend . I have seen first hand that when the DR. leaves the pts room after the visit there are not so many nice words regarding the pt.

The involvement of PRMC in innecessary stent surgeries is not unexpected. The institution is morally bankrupt and has a very low standards of ethics. Doctors and staff at PRMC will put patients under medical risk and falsify records because of greed, treat patients without respect or care and even have sex at the hospital and nothing is ever done. Good people are afraid to speak up and the environment is very bad. Someone needs to step up to the plate and make some changes. It is time to look in the mirror!

3:23 You are right! I have heard the same thing. The doctors and staff of PRMC cannot be trusted to watch out for the patient. They are very arrogant and only care about themeselves. The patient always comes last!

From my own personal experiences at PRMC I can say that to them, the patient comes last! I am not surprised by the disgusting acts they have allowed to happen under their roof!!

My experience at prmc (I will use capital letters when and if they use capital care) was there is not only below average patient care but also very low consideration for the families as well. I was involved in a major accident. When my wife arrived at the ER she was directed to room and told I was in there. She was not escorted mind you, so when she walked into the room and the only things in there were all of my wet clothes, which had been cut off of me, piled in a corner. Think this may have been a bit traumatic? prmc obviously doesn't think so. I then went thru 6 hours of surgey and remained in the hospital 5 days. You know how many times I saw the surgeon? Once. That's right, once. Two metal plates along with 2 fractures and a dislocated elbow and one visit from the doctor was good enough for him. Then weeks later I developed blood clots, was readmitted and received the same low grade care. I was even offered ibuprofen for pain. Ibuprofen with blood clots is an absolute no no. I only found his out later. Thankfully I turned it down to wait for approved meds. I eventually ended up at Johns Hopkins. What a difference. Absolute night and day. They have banners all around the lobby and cafeteria areas about commitment to care and they absolutely mean it and do it. prmc has no right to put up any banners or voice any statements about their commitment to care.
