Dwight F. Holden, chairman of the embattled state Board of Parole, stormed out of a board meeting Tuesday, claiming to prison officials he felt physically threatened by fellow members.
The four other board members, who have been at odds with Holden for more than a year, were questioning the chairman about his new employment with the Department of Correction when the argument turned heated inside a conference room at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, said DOC Commissioner Carl Danberg.
"He chose to leave the room because he believed the confrontation was likely to turn physical if he did not," said Danberg, who was dispatched to the Smyrna prison to respond to the incident.
The argument was purportedly so disruptive that the deputy warden told the Parole Board they would be barred from holding meetings at the prison if they had any future outbursts, Danberg said.
Board members disputed Holden and Danberg's version of the events, saying the conversation never got heated, much less close to the point of a fight breaking out.
