Feeding Kids When Parents, Schools Can't

Editor's Note: Education Overtime is an eight-week series that focuses on the conversations surrounding education issues that affect students, teachers, parents and the community.

Cobb County, Georgia (CNN) -- For many, summer means vacation, sports, camping or just time off to relax, but not for millions of kids living in poverty in the United States. There are few camps or beach trips for them, and sometimes not even three meals a day.

During the school year, public schools provide breakfast and lunch to millions of students in the United States. But when summer arrives, parents struggling to feed their children can no longer rely on those meals.

More than 21 million children receive free or reduced-price lunches at school. But in the summer, the number of kids participating in food programs drops to fewer than 3 million, despite efforts to raise awareness and increase community support, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

To help fill that gap, one community in suburban Atlanta is delivering food -- and hope -- in brown paper bags.

These kids will be feed . Most of these kids parents make more than any of us. It's a cheating game blown out of proportion.

Schools are a learning center , not a resturant!

Well 3:56 is right. Most of the kids eligible for free meals live in households that get food stamps. So why can't their lazy parents pack them a bag lunch during the school year? And why can't they feed them in the summertime? They live better than alot of us do.
If your kid wears Fubu or Uggs you should be ashamed to say "you can't feed them" Get a life.

4:58 > No proof, huh? You know what you can do then.

5:00 > Give me a better plan to feed these hungry children and I will be glad to listen.

5:38 Here's an idea- put them in an orphanage and let their no good, lazy parents rot on the streets because then they won't be able to use their kids as their meal ticket.

I have no problem with feeding hungry children. However why should we feed them breakfast and lunch at school then turn around and give them money in food stamps each month.

Think about this. If you are on welfare how much free stuff can you actually get?? You can get free breakfast and lunch at school. You can also go to the food bank and pick up food not to mention other food pantries in the area. They have WIC that they get for free. They have several parks in Salisbury that are open from the am until 8 or 9pm at night. Free day care. There are also programs that will help pay their electric bills. They can get section 8 housing. Free medical care. Free school supplies and I'm sure there are many more that I'm not even aware of. These people have no incentive to work while we are giving them everything for free. They have made this a way of life. Meanwhile the person that really could use a helping hand or a hand up can't get any help at all. If they want to feed these kids breakfast, lunch and dinner at a school I have no problem with that but take away the food stamps that many are abusing anyway. Think of the money we could save.

I do have a problem with feeding hungry children. I know a lot of people aren't going to agree with me but this is my opinion. Why should I, with my tax dollars, have to feed your children. If you can't afford to feed your children, on your welfare dime, then STOP having them. It is not my responsibility to feed them. I didn't sign up to feed all the hungry children with my tax dollars. By the way, I have no children, so no one has ever had to feed mine. I think this country should go to mandatory sterilization. If you are already on welfare and can't feed yourself or your first or second child then you should be "fixed". Why should you be allowed to drop 6 kids by 5 different fathers just so you can "get more help to feed your starving kids". Cry me a river. I'm sick of that old tune. Your get welfare to feed them. You get 2,000.00 tax credits on each of them, when you do work for about a month just so you can file taxes. You pay in 200.00 in federal taxes and get back a refund of 10,000.00 and immediately run out and buy a new car with some "smokin rims". Am I pissed about it. You d*mn right I am. Meanwhile we better cut funding to Social Security and Medicare because we are going broke. Give me a break. My father and stepfather both worked all their lives. Both died at 64 years of age--having never collected a dime of the money they had paid in to Social Security or Medicare. How many other times has this happened? Many, I'm sure. But yet, we have to cut those programs. Yeah right. Cut the programs for the people who wouldn't work in a pie shop eating every other pie. They all have the newest cell phones, the nicest clothes, new cars, and of course, "rims". This is in addition to not having to pay for health insurance like the rest of us have to pay. I better stop now. I feel my blood pressure rising. I'll need a trip to the doctor which I will have to actually pay for.
