National Report On State Budgets Says Maryland Economic Recovery On Track

A new national report on state budgets highlights Maryland as one of the more promising examples of economic recovery, but like most states, Maryland is still facing big budget gaps as federal stimulus dollars dry up.

Maryland’s revenues are running ahead of projections across the board for fiscal 2010, according to a report released by the National Conference of State Legislatures, looking at the budgets in all 50 states.

The good news, however, is misleading. Warren Deschenaux, director of the Legislature’s Office of Policy Analysis, said that back when the FY 2010 budget was being considered, a 5% across-the-board decrease in revenues was projected. “It looks like we only declined about 3%, so we’re ahead of the estimate,” Deschenaux said. “If you look at the year as a whole, we are still taking in less than the year before.”

Would ther still be budget gaps if they quit buying land from their buddies calling Project Open Space? Shut down Project Open Space and put that money back in the budget. Anyone who donates land for Project Open Space with no Tax Deduction is welcome to do so. Cut Politians retirement to 50% of the present amount, they will still be getting enough to live on, which is still more than the average State Employee would get. No more automatic pay raises. No more State money to non-profits. Refigure a budget eliminating these factors and Maryland could reduce taxes instead of constantly ripping off the Tax Payer for their benefit.

Excellent ideas to start cuts in MD budget problems but I would also add see all this Land MD owns and restrict it by legislation like they do on everybody else. This would also put it back on the tax records. This would give the Crooks in Annapolis more money to spend and the rich Good Ole Boys would have to pay more taxes instead of being a swindler.
