Marina Grand Re-Opening

Thursday, July 1st 3 p.m.

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. announces the grand re-opening of the Port of Salisbury Marina, Thursday July 1st, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. and invites the public to attend. The marina is located downtown at 506 W. Main Street. Port of Salisbury is a full service marina with free Wi-Fi internet, bicycles for transportation, showers and a barbeque & picnic area. The newly arrived and installed fuel tanks are operable with both conventional (ethanol-free) gasoline and low sulfur diesel. There are boat slips available with the option to live aboard.

Michael Murray, Marina Commission Chairman says, “I am pleased to see the marina is back in full swing once again with fuel accessibility drawing our community and local boaters as well as transients. On behalf of myself and the Marina Committee, I would like to thank all past and present mayors and councils that have helped make the marina become what it is today. I know they would be pleased to see how the marina has become an asset to the City of Salisbury, Wicomico County and the Wicomico River. We’re here but we don’t just want to stop here. We always want to be looking ahead at the growth for the community. Reflecting back to the 80’s since the original ribbon-cutting of this marina, we certainly have come a long way. I’m proud and grateful to the mayor and city council for what has transpired in the last few months to get our marina back on its feet.”

Salisbury Marina Project Engineer, Weston Young says, “Improvements to the Port of Salisbury Marina, including the new fuel tanks, are thanks in large part to the Waterway Improvement Fund grant through the Department of Natural Resources Boating Services as well as the City Council. Since the Public Works Department has acquired the operations of the marina, we have worked closely with the Marina Commission to improve the services we are able to offer to patrons.”

“The revitalization of the port of Salisbury marina culminates in Thursday’s grand reopening. As an example of what government does right I congratulate City Council for taking the steps to get the marina back on track. Our partners: the Marina Commission, the Department of Natural Resources Boating Services, Urban Salisbury, and the boaters who utilize our marina are applauded for helping the city take another step in the revitalization of Salisbury’s urban core,” said Mayor Ireton.

^^Yep I hear that. The port of salisbury is a waste of money, and it doesn't generate money.

How many times do you guys have to step in the same pile of dog sh!t, before you take another path. Who the heck is going to ride threw all those six mile an hour zones? Nobody thats who.

Will there be sufficient police protection to make it safe to attend in that part of town?

They say they've come a long way , The only time they showed a profit was in the first 5 years of operation .

"Yep I hear that. The port of salisbury is a waste of money, and it doesn't generate money."

You are right. It doesn't generate any money. Only the influx of businesses and residents generate money (Government employees only redistribute money).

A wise man would want to create a positive atmosphere that could attract business and new residents beyond the limited employer magnets (Health, Chickens, Education). The marina can be an attraction. A lively downtown can be one too. These are magnets for new residents beyond employment. Attracting businesses has been cut off by the Legislature in Annapolis for years. So, until you clean house in Annapolis, one of the few options Salisbury has left is to attract retirees.

It doesn't help when the State of Maryland taxes boaters in excess . I went to tag my 18 foot trailer and it was going to cost me 300.00 when it was all said and done . I decided another avenue .

WTF, old docks covered with sea gull crap, overlooking the worst street downtown on one side, and a FILTHY river on the other, this must be some kind of sick joke! Great, new fuel tanks with so little turnover of fuel it will get old, then the problems begin all over again for the very few boaters foolish enough to buy the product. Oh, by lets not forget the mare now has a place to dock the new $850,000 fire boat, thats it......... I understand now!

Do like I did tag the trailer in Maine only $90 for 5 years. When Salisbury cleans up the river I may look into renting a slip. Ethanol free gas helps.

Does Salisbury Marina have a dockmaster??? If so who is it??

3 PM on a Thursday, Hey mayor not all of us are school teachers. Most of us don't get off work until 4:30 - 5:00.

If the marina is stuck there, Im glad to see them get rid of that company that was was running it (into the ground). They got fuel again. Maybe it's got a chance.

At least they are taking care of something for onec instead of letting everything turn to ----.

I had my boat there years ago. I liked it, glad to see it come back.

It used to be a great place but when you have groups like the worthless Marina committee no wonder it's suffering. If they wanted to fill the slips put covers on some of them !

I nevre go near the wicomico river. It is so pulloted you risk your health even touching the ater. Putting a boat in there it would be so covered in filth you would have to scrub it for days to get it clean! Salisbury is a joke when it comes to actually doing anything right. that whole downtown area you be blown up then it could be fixed up right, maybe then people would actually want to go there! slums on one side with a foul or is that fowl smelling processing plant!

7:12 The river is not that dirty ,you should have seen it in the 70's when Perdue used to dump right into it .

725-Perdue still dumps into it. There's a reason the heavy metal levels are so high, as well as a litany of other signs of dumping. I won't fish in the wicomico. Nor would I use the marina.

If the Mayor is such a strong supporter of Urban Salisbury...why didn't he do the Grand Opening on a 3rd Friday? I guess he needs a lesson in Marketing 101.

Above ground tanks will condense and sweat in the heat we have had, I hope they have a good moisture seperator in line somewhere. Water in the fuel sucks.

The Marina was a busy place in the beginning what happened ?

I see where Wicomico county is going to charge a fee to use the county boat ramps that the tax payers already paid for what a crock boaters are already raped just because they have boats .
