A Letter To The Editor

Joe,

I recently had a situation at a local dentist office in Salisbury that I wanted to make aware to the community and possibly other patients of this office. I would greatly appreciate it if you would post this. I went in for a regular dental cleaning at Merritt Mill Dental several weeks ago and everything went as usual. The following day I received a text message from someone. I was not sure who it was at the time. Come to find out it was a employee of Merritt Mill Dental. I quickly learned that this young man went into my medical file and got my cell phone number.

I called the dentist office to speak to a supervisor and the young man that text me hung up on me when I told him who I was. I called the office back and insisted to speak to a supervisor immediately. A supervisor got on the phone and I explained the situation to her. She completely minimized the situation and stated sometimes patients exchange numbers with employees and give them permission to call or text them. I explained to the supervisor that I am a happily married and faithful woman and a mother of two children. The supervisor's response to me was that she would speak to the employee and have him call me to apologize. To my knowledge no disciplinary action was taken and the young man is still employed there.

I am completely outraged by this office's conduct. If this young man went into my file to get my cell phone number, what other information did he take?! My purpose of posting this on your blog is to make other people aware that this had occurred. I'm sure I'm not the first person he's done this to and probably wont be the last.

That's a violation of HIPPA laws, I'd file a complaint with the state dental board.

Don't See the Big Deal Here said...

Do you actually want them to fire the guy for asking you out? You didn't say what the text message was but that is what you implied.

Would you have been this upset if he had propositioned you in person and not by text?

Maybe you should just be flattered.

omg that's a HUGE no no. he should be fired immediately. MAJOR HIPPA violation there. Ma'am, if i were you i would file a formal complaint ASAP whether they took 'appropriate' action with that guy or not.

that's really scary. i'm sure this happens more often than we know about...

please keep us posted of the outcome.

He should be fired--completely unprofessional.

That office is the most unprofessional office I have ever been in. I will not take my family there ever again.
Just a note, please don't give your cell phone number to anyone or business unless you trust them 100% This is why I keep my land line.

I've never heard of this dentist office but I definitely will not be going there now!

I would definitely report them to the state dental board.

9:15, it is a complete invasion of privacy and is very illegal. There are laws prohibiting this type of behavior for a reason. It is TOTALLY different if he would have propositioned her in person WITHOUT having gone to her file to get information. Sounds like this is something that you have done in the past perhaps???? Totally out of bounds and she has EVERY right to be upset by this. This employee at the VERY least should be reprimanded and put on suspension or notice. IMO, should be fired so he doesn't have access to any other patient information. What's to keep him from doing it again to someone else? What's to say he didn't drive by her house given that he also had access to her home address in that file? Could be a major problem depending on how far this guy wants to go to get access to this woman. Think about it. What if it happened to your wife or your daughter? I'd want heads to roll and would most likely look to file some sort of charges if possible.

This office is so unprofessional, i used to go there , their billing is so screwed up they try to get over on you everything i had done their was horrible. The office staff is weird. They dont know how to talk to people on phone or in person. and dont dare ask for a copy of your records. they are such a mess never updated and they try to charge you way to much for any copies.....

Anonymous said...

I go to Merritt Mill unfortunately. I am familiar with this young man. I believe that his mother is the office secretary, which is why he works there. If the victim of this event called into to speak to the office manager it was probably his mother and that is why it was minimized. I have recently stopped using them as a dentist because of the all around unprofessionalism by staff and hygenists.

OMG!! I soooooo hate this dentist office. They are the MOST UNPROFESSIONAL people on earth!!! I showed up with my daughter, on more than one occasion, and they said "oh, we had to cancel your appt. but we forgot to call and tell you." I had to get a copy of her x-rays for the orthodontist, and they gave me the wrong ones.... Then blamed me, saying I switched them somehow. I tried for a day and a half to call when my daughter was having severe mouth pain, left message after message, and no one ever called back. Finally I went through my cell phone bills and found a different number they had called me from once, the Dr's private line. They answered that line, and the office manager blessed me out and told me I could not call on that line. I told her I would continue to call on that line because it is the only *&^%$! line they answered. Unfortunately I couldn't call another dentist because that was the only local dentist that took her father's dental insurance. And did Dr. Singh ever bother to talk to me after her cleaning was done. I was right in the room and they never asked her any of the questions my dentist asks me. Thank God we ended up getting different insurance so we could go elsewhere. And if anyone needs that phone number to the private line, I still have it.

Anonymous said...

WOW i will NEVER go to these people... In my opinion the mother and son should be fired!

Anonymous said...

10:12, one way around the mother is to file a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities and go around her. If this is actually the case, it needs to be dealt with appropriately to make sure it doesn't happen again to someone else. It's pretty sick

Anonymous said...

The supervisor as well as the young man should be fired. He violated HIPPA laws. As an office manager, it was her responsibility to fire him immediately. I would file a complaint with the dental board as well.

Anonymous said...

this person also has your address, social security number and any thing else they could need to make your life miserable. call the police and file a report with them as well. your safety is at risk. the dental office should be investigated thoroughly

Joe, could you please bump this post up to the top of your blog. I read a ton of your posts today and almost stopped when I came upon this one waaaaaay down the list and I almost missed it. I think this is one of the most important services you bring to the community. Consumer Protection!

I believe some laws were broken here. In this day and age of child molesters and other criminals on the streets this can not be taken too lightly. If he went into one persons file for personal information he should NEVER, and i mean NEVER, have access to anyones file EVER again. PERIOD

joe some of these comments like 11:00 are unbelievable and dismiss the fact that this guy/kid went into someones personal file for information they would not have otherwise had. SO stupid and inmature are the comments like 11:00 and show a complete lack of taste its not funny.

Quite possibly they are trying to deflect attention away from the real ue here and its also likely they are from the office in question. Can they be tracked Joe?

I truly cannot believe the ignorance of posters on here in that this is a major major breach of privacy. I think some of the idiots on here would not be 'sticking up' for this guy if it had happened to them or someone they love. Total crap.

For many people their cell phone number is the only way you can reach them. My dental appts are all made over my cell.

Just as a heads up, based on her quite distinct writing style the original complainer appears to be responsible for well over half of the "they're awful" letters in this thread pretending to come from different people. Valid complaints are one thing, deliberate and malicious campaigns to destroy a business are another. Take care that your blog is not being used like this.

Anonymous said...

MAJOR...HIPPA violation. There are federal laws against using personal patient information for any reason. Definately file a complaint to the Maryland Board that handles dentist offices. You have grounds for legal action and the fines imposed on the person as well as the dental office are enormous. You can forward the text messages to your e-mail address to print and therefore have a hard copy for complaint and legal purposes.

That office is the absolute worst and I only know from having to take my grandchildren there the few times their parents were unable. Again the situation was they were the only dentist in town who took their insurance. You probably could fill a whole page on the blog with complaints about that office.

Anonymous said...

11:31, I personally have no issues with this blog being used to force action against a business practicing like this. I have no idea where this office is and have never been there myself, but I sure appreciate knowing that this happened there and I think many others will as well. Who in their right mind wants their privacy invaded like this? If no action is taken and this continues, I certainly have no qualms about this blog being used to destroy this business. anyone else?

Anonymous said...

2:01, we don't have the right to talk about laws? that makes no sense whatsoever. spelling aside, this has to do with the assumed right to privacy and how that was blatantly broken here. Who cares about the spelling of it? Really? Oh, ok, we can't spell it, so let's just drop it and forget it ever happened. Use your head.

If folks don't speak up and let others know about situations like this.... I do not mean it will be.... BUT ,,,,, look at that Bradley jerk. People have to live with that the rest of their lives... SPEAK UP !!!

Absolute worst dentist office ever!!!!! I recieved a bill from them for me and someone I know. Please keep in mind a HUGE violation of HIPPA, I called the office they didn't care and continue to send me my bill and this other person's in the same envelope (4 times now)!!! Plus, I have not been to that office in two years and they are sending me a bill at which they billed the wrong insurance companies and are expecting me to pay it. I told them I was refusing to pay the bill until I saw billing for the correct insurance companies. They have yet to show me any of my records. Plus, they cancel your appointments if you do not confirm their reminder phone calls, but yet you can NEVER go through to their office, phone line is always busy! NEVER GO THERE!!!!!!

You think this place is bad, you should see Peninsula Periodontics and Orthodontics! That place is horrible. Dr. Perim is so crooked but seems to get away with everything through the dental board. I know for a fact that he is being investigated by the Attorney General for fraud. He can't keep employees around because he either fires them for knowing too much or they quit. If you are a patient, be sure that you check your bills because he charges you for things he does not even do.

There have been numerous complaints to the dental board so beware!

Anonymous said...

um...hello....bright one...I would keep my mouth shut if I were you...It's HIPPA -- Health Insurance Privacy Protection Act. Check that acronym....2:01

Anonymous said...

Dr. Perim? Yeah. I had dealings with him about 12 years ago. He always recommends "one more procedure" before he's ready to do the work you consulted him for. In our case, our son needed braces. I finally took my son elsewhere for orthodontics work and and was told he didn't need any other "prep" work -- he was ready to be fitted for the braces. Dr. Perim was just stringing us along for more money. He's another one to avoid!

Anonymous said...

I would be curious to see if anyone else has been ripped off by Dr. Perim. I had a similar experience to 6:02. I was overcharged "thousands" for procedures that I did not approve for my son. I fought him and was told that they were either "necessary" or that he really didn't do them and it was a mistake.

I immediately went to another orthodontist and was told that hardly any of the work was needed.

How can he keep getting away with this crap! From what I am told, he is the "joke" of other orthodontists in town.

Hold on a minute. The office manager calls you back to apologize and you want to try to get her in trouble for that?

Sounds like you are at least part of the problem. I get that you are mad, and rightfully so, but you first complained that they did not apologize then when they try to you put them on blast? You are hurting your creditability here. HIPPA violation or not, you are coming off as a drama queen to me.

First things first...It is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act). Second the reason or HIPAA is to protect the consumer. It is not or someone to violate a person's right to privacy which includes a private telephone number. We all may agree the boy was wrong and should be ired. I can't believe the one's blasting the victim when the mother once again violated her right to privacy. Why would the mother call her? To fix things? Sound like she has done that way too many times in this boy'slife. Why is he working at mommy's office? Get off the VICTIM's back and address the real issue. Or will it take him stalking or attacking her. Shame on you.

Merritt Mill Dental is a very trashy and unprofessional office. I dont even know where to start. Dr. Singh uses the same burs on every patients teeth without steralizing them. The assistants reach in the cabnets with their dirty gloves on to get supplies. Wait until you see the girls at the front desk! They have rotten teeth and smile from ear to ear. They also reek of cigarettes and marijuana. Dr. Singh is a pervert by the way he looks at women. Staring down their shirts and at their back sides. The boys mom isnt the office manager. she pretends to be, to get him out of trouble. Dr. Singh has been known by his past assistants and other dentists, as a pervert also. In the past, Dr. Singh has followed one of his assistants home from work offering money for favors. Another assisant that is no longer there was told by Dr. Singh that her leggs were sexy and the office manager, his wife, fired the girl the next day. Dr. Singh threatens to retaliate badly to the girls if they were to tell anyone to get him in trouble. good luck turning this office in to hippa. They will all come together and lie their way out of trouble. keep us updated on your progress please!

I was a patient at that office as well, and I can totally agree that the office staff are the most UNPROFESSIONAL I have ever seen or dealt with. Hopefully something is done here ....

I had a very bad ending to my time as a patient there. We took my young daughter in to see the dental hygienist for the first time. Keep in mind this was her first dental visit in her young life. The lady was rude to her, verbally forceful with her, and reduced her to tears. There wasn’t a once of child friendly encouragement from her. She scared and intimidated my daughter and even told her of all the graphic painful things that could happen to her if she didn’t comply. When her mother made me aware of this I was livid. I called the practice up and blasted them. I couldn’t believe they would have someone speak this way to a young child visiting the dental office for the first time. The office manager apologized and had the hygienist call me. The hygienist proceeded to say that she was sorry we had a problem with her and was sorry we misunderstood her! At this point I was so bothered I called the practice up again and let them know how upset we were. Oh, if you call there they may answer the phone or they may take your message or you may never get a return call from them. Their office staff looks like they run the 11-7 shift at the local truck stop. I couldn’t believe I had been foolish enough to continue to go there. I left the office a message explaining my displeasure with them and asked for my dental records to switch practices. A week later I get a bill for $200 for fees from 8 years ago. I had never been without dental insurance that entire time and paid co-pays upon each visit. I was never once told I had a balance during the many many office visits I had. I never once received a bill in the mail either. I paid each time exactly what I was told I owed. This bill sent me into a rage. This was their way of saying I wasn’t going to get my records. I wrote them a letter basically saying they’d see me in hell before I paid them anything. I called them again telling them how out of line this billing practice was. A few days later I got a call saying the balance was forgiven. Balance? I had no stinking balance. I can’t tell you how bad a practice that has become. I don’t think it was always that way though. My family was pleased for a while there but the staff that was being hired began to resemble the beer line at an Ozzy Osbourne concert. To add insult to injury, my new dental office after examining me said two fillings I was due for at Merritt Mill were unnecessary! I couldn’t believe my ears. The only good thing I have left to say about the place is the Dentist Dr. Chin is a really good dentist. He seems to care a lot and was good to me with the exception of maybe seeing cavities that didn't exist. In fairness, the new dentist said the x-rays could have had shadows in those areas as she could understand why they said they needed to be filled. Regardless, That practice has turned into a dive. It’s an unprofessional mess and I’m sorry others have had terrible experiences. Anyone reading this that is still a patient, do yourself a favor and get out of there before your dental health goes down the tubes....

I'm so glad this woman came forward. I made up my mind a few months ago never to go back after a bad experience with their dental hygenist regarding the way she spoke to my young daughter who was scared when she got her teeth cleaned and did not want to cooperate at first. I have had ongoing problems for years w/their staff not answering phones/not returning messages I left on the machines. They constantly called me at work expecting me to drop everything and rush over hours early for a scheduled appointment, or to come in a day early, or to cancel. They always got my appointment times mixed up. They would continue to call me on my cell phone even though I asked them to call at work because I do not answer my cell phone when I am at work. Even though they had my home/work/cell numbers and hours I work, they would constantly call my home and leave messages when I was at work or vice versa. We have also had problems w/billing errors. My co-workers left this practice and go elsewhere and pay more out of pocket because Dr. Singh messed up their dental work! I didn't want to believe it! My husband saw one of Dr. Singh's former assistants in the community who told him Dr. Singh sexually harassed her then fired her for not going out w/him. This is dispicable. This man thinks he can get away with something like that? Who does he think he is? I am outraged by people making comments about the lady who reported this. This guy did not have a right to go into her personal file and get her cell # and text her. That is totally unprofessional and inappropriate. This teen used to go to work w/his mother on days he was off from school when he was in high school and help out in the office. I always thought that was unprofessional for a kid to have access to private records that are confidential and to dress in t-shirts and jeans. It's true his mother works there. She has always been nice to me and so has one of the other young girls. From what I have seen Dr. Chin has always been nice. Another thing that struck me as odd is when one of the dental hygenists was cleaning my teeth and I shared w/her that I was thinking of changing from Dr. Singh to Dr. Chin (because he is a sexual harasser but I did not tell her I knew this), she shook her head and said, unh unh, he is not very good, stick w/Dr. Singh. I thought that was very unprofessional. I will be getting my records transferred even quicker now. And if the blogger who said Dr. Singh does not sterilize his dental equipment, this makes me sick to my stomach. I want this investigated and if it is found true I guess I will have to get tested for HIV/AIDS now. If true, we all need to file a class action law suit against these frauds!

11am you are sick and probably the kid working in the dental office!

11:31am you are probably the mom! I've been a patient at Merritt Mill for about 7 yrs because they take my insurance but have been shopping around for a different practice because my dental insurance recently changed and because of my bad experiences.
The bloggers who have not been there need to stop making comments. I believe everything I am reading because I've had the same experience. I can only hope the part is not true about Dr. Singh not sterilizing his instruments. If a staff person or former staff person had knowledge of this and did not report it then shame on him or her! They should also be held criminally responsible for their turning the other cheek! That is just sick!

Anonymous said...

The office manager that called her back WAS THE MOTHER.. not just another person in the office to apologize! ALSO, it should be added that it took taking it to the blogs for that call. The intitial call the "office manager" blamed it on the victim. It's a different story when it hit the publics attention! No one said the world was ending. This could potentially be a very serious matter. Do you know the person sittin gbehind the desk at your drs office well enough to know they won't use the phone number, address, social or any other information wrongfully? I bet Bradley's patients thought they were safe.
The point is the office did not take the appropriate steps!

Anonymous said...

actually, I would have to agree that the mom and son are blogging on here since it did take this blog for them to call the person to apologize. I think they saw this blog and panicked and made the call, now they are trying to make it look like this ladies fault. Any sensible person would see how wrong this is in so many ways and would not be posting anything negative against the victim. So, yes, I think they are blogging here to try to deflect the blame. Any way you put it, they are in deep trouble if this lady wants to give it to them. AND, she should. This office needs to be investigated and it needs to be investigated now. This could go in so many bad directions, that it needs to be put to a stop immediately.

Anonymous said...

Joe, can you put this blog back at the top to give it more 'air time' again. this is an important topic that needs to remain open so others can see it, respond and possible remove themselves and/or their children from this office so to avoid similar occurrences. Just IMO.

This is the world, we live in. Now everyone of you on here griping about this invasion of privacy, filled out the paper work required of new patients and handed them to a receptionist you did not know. These documents included all kinds of information that could have been taken and sold. Some of you think obamacare is great well guess what? untold numbers of people will now have direct access to you medical records. This thing called privacy is gone. THis boy had no balls to ask her out in person and that is sad but invasion of privacy, I don't think so. I could just know your name and find out almost anything about you. Scary thought..

Anonymous said...

Hippa is to doctors what Kelly blue book is to car dealers. It is simply a guide. The main problem is there is no one that does random inspections to look for violations. Hippa is a good concept but has no real teeth. I have seen some local doctors turn a blind eye because of a lack of enforcement. I used to go to this office and had similar issues and transferred.

My family went to Merritt Mill Dental and also Pine Way Dental (that's what Merritt Mill was called before they moved from Pine Way). I had a number of problems while going there. I finally made a change to a new dental office after my children had late afternoon apts for cleanings/6mo checkup. When cleanings were done and it was time for dentist to look at their teeth, I was told that the dentist had left for the day and that I would need to set up another apt for the dentist to see the children. Taking into consideration cancelled apts and uncomfortable experiences, I made the change. I believe this dental office is corporatly owned (from Baltimore area?)not run by local dentists. This way you are not getting attention from dentists who will be there long term and who have personal interest in maintaining outstanding patient relations as it is not their own dental practice.

I've been going to this place since 2002 and haven't had any major problems. My big complaints are that their billing is horrendous. When they finally bill me, it's for stuff I had done 3 years prior. Then I have to go through all my paperwork to make sure the bill seems right. I have requested that they bill me in a timely manner to no avail. The other problem is you can not get in touch with anyone there unless you travel there or they call you. You can attempt to call them, leave them a message, but you will never hear back. This place does seem a little getto though. My wife hates the place. I've considered many times of finding a new dentist but they are close to me and, being disabled, it's pretty easy to get in there. Maybe it's time to start looking elsewhere.

"Since this blog has been posted, the young man's mother did call me and requested to speak to me. Once again, I asked her how she got my number. Her response was "from your file". She stated the dentist there gave her permission to call me. She was calling to discuss this issue with her son."

If I am reading these comments correctly, the mother works at the office and called you back to hear your side of the story and apologize and you want to bite her back? I agree with the original complaint, but the office calling you back about a problem you had is not any sort of invasion of privacy at all. You kind of asked for it when you stated that the man who texted you had not called back to apologize yet and called out the lady for how she handled the situation. They both owe you an apology- let them give it.

There is no question that this should not have happened and the manager handled it badly in the initial call, but they got blogged and apparently saw the light. For that Joe is to be thanked for giving the community this blog to turn to!

I visited the website and it states, "The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides federal protections for personal health information held by covered entities and gives patients an array of rights with respect to that information."

Is a cell phone number considered, "personal health information"? If not, I don't see an "official" violation here. However, I do see a lot of bad judgment by the dentist office staff.

I took this approach rather than having to call Merritt Mill or go there in person. If they do not transfer my records in a timely manner with no charge you better believe I will then pay them a not so nice visit in person and file a formal complaint with the dental board. I should have done this earlier but have not had the time. Thanks to the woman who wrote the letter to Joe. It inspired me to do it ASAP!

Im am a PT there and I have onlyl had 1 issue and it was resulved with in the hour..... My daughter and my Sister both go here and we have had great service from the staff in the back... The front office is a different story... I never did like the son ther his mom looks like hatchet face from cry baby and the woman who reschedules you has the personality of a wet mop. The son has been fired and they have a new girl in there as of yesterday.

I'm a dental assistant in the community. One of my girlfriends in the classes with me worked for Merritt Mill. Based on what she told me, I would never, ever go there. She said it was awful, dirty, blood splattered on the charts, and I do remember her telling us the story about the sexy legs comment and the girl getting fired the next day. Dr. Perim, that's a whole other story. No one is more awful or more crooked than he is. I'm ashamed to say some of the things I know for a fact he has done. Stay away from BOTH.

I had my teeth cleaned and as the dental assistant was finishing up she had found no cavities but called one of the Dentists over who proceeded to tell me that I had two cavities, neither of which the hygienist could see. Foolishly I didn't get a second opinion but rather went in to have them both filled. The dentist I had do the filling was not the same dentist that said he saw two cavities. I know something was fishy when the dentist doing the filling only filled one of the "cavities" and decided not to fill the other one. Here's why, there never were any cavities. The other "cavity" that he didn't fill has never materialized into anything (5 years and not dentist visits later) because the 2 "cavities" were dental fraud. I see another reviewer has also posted experience of unnecessary fillings at this dental office.
