Details On A Few Events In Wicomico Schools This Monday and Tuesday

Monday, April 19
3rd annual Night Under the Milky Way
Salisbury Middle School

On Monday, April 19th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Salisbury Middle School will host its 3rd annual Night Under the Milky Way. The night of the event, students will be treated to a wide array of interactive activities, including a traveling planetarium show, night sky viewing by the Delmarva Stargazers, Aliens! -- an examination of what may have happened in Roswell, New Mexico, stellar rocket launch competitions, a 3-D projection globe show, and much, much more.

Hosts for some of the night's events include: Keith Koehler and Phil Eberspeaker from NASA's Wallops Island base, Dr. Seth Friese and Dr. Andy Pica from Salisbury University and Professors Chris Hartman and Brian McElwain from UMES. Science fiction characters such as Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and others will also be in attendance.

Salisbury Middle School created this event in order to build parent, teacher and community interaction, as well as to raise the consciousness of the community about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. This event is open to Salisbury Middle School students and their families.

The school is a member of the National Network of Partnership (NNPS) schools through Johns Hopkins University. NNPS focuses on parent involvement. In 2009, the school was a winner of a 'Best Practice' Award from NNPS for the creation of this family/community event. Monday, April 19 and Friday, April 23
Kickoff and Finale of First-Grade Arts Enhanced Education Residency
Willards Elementary School

At 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, Willards Elementary will kick off its first-grade residency of Arts Enhanced Education with a school-wide performance, “NRITYA: Storytelling through Dance – Myths, Legends and Folk Tales of India.” This 45-minute performance will take place in the school cafeteria. For the rest of the week, first-grade students will work with Lakshmi Swaminathan to integrate Classical Dance from India into their learning about Indian culture and literature. The students will perform their learning on Friday April 23rd at 1:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. 410-677-5819.

Board of Education Awards & Recognitions Night
Wicomico Middle School

The next Wicomico County Board of Education Awards & Recognitions Night of the 2009-10 school year will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Wicomico Middle School to honor outstanding students, teachers, administrators, schools, programs and community partners.
