County Ferry Fee?

This department also operates two automobile ferries that provide a route across the Wicomico River, free of charge. The Upper Ferry is located on Upper Ferry Road off Pemberton Drive and the Whitehaven Ferry provides access from Whitehaven to Somerset County.

Joe ,

The above is from the county web site however the Ferry operator told me the county is planning to charge for Ferry use . He said there would be a sticker like they issue for the dump costing tax payers another 60 dollars a year for a Ferry that they have already paid for.

Currently, the hours of operation have been reduced. The amount of time and fuel that is saved by travellers that use the ferrys is significant. It also draws tourists to the area.

There are many examples of tolls being charged for bridges, roads and tunnels that have been paid for by taxpayers. If the service hours could be extended and MINIMAL disruption in operation it may be worth looking into.

A committee appointed by the County Council could do a feasibility study and provide it to the Council and the citizens of Wicomico County for consideration.

Draws tourists? What are you smoking? Just because the county is too cheap to build a permanent bridge(especially at Upper Ferry). Scheisters!

remember any bridge built in those locations would have to be tall enough to allow waterway traffic, i think its 50-70 feet about high tide. doesnt seem like a big deal until you look at where it would land on both shores.

this is a federal requirement if i recall correctly, i cannot remember what agency though, most likely army corp of engineers or coast guard. they regulate navigable waters

More to come! Any where a fee can be imposed expect it. DO NOT expect responsible spending! To save money they lay off the actual works and fail to look at anyof overpaid management. How can this county continue to justify employing currently retired county excutivies at large salaries and benifits to do the job Rick Pollit was hired to do. If I new the county executive was going to continue business as it was under the county administrator (Cramer) and keep him and Shay in their jobs, I would not voted for the Executive form of government. It was sold as a cost saving measure but under Pollit this has not happened and cost continue to get higher and higher with no end in sight. Its tax and spend with no concept of fiscial responsibility. I am sure the TAX CAP is part of the problem, however I voted for it because of excessive spending and tax increased and as lng as our elected officials have the TAX and Spend mentalitally, I
WILL NOT vote to repeal the tax cap!! So continue to look for more increased and new user fees.

If one only used the ferry a few times a year or was a tourist, what would their fee be?

If a few is charged I will never use the ferry again. You can call me cheap if you want but to me its the principal. Yes I understand there is a height limit for a bridge but gee whiz get over it and build it. No one has ever said it had to be in the exact location of one of the ferries.

With traffic from that part of the county growing in crazy numbers how can you not put a bridge at some point. Or do you prefer we continue to back up for miles on Nanticoke Rd?
