ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Martin O'Malley has appointed six new members to Maryland's Sexual Offender Advisory Board to redefine its purpose.
The board was created in 2006 to certify sex offender treatment providers and make recommend how to strengthen laws.
But the board never met to do any of that. The law did not require members of board to have specialized skills for certifying programs.Legislation to address shortcomings of the panel has stalled in recent years. Another bill was introduced last week to address what some have perceived to be constitutional concerns over its authority.
A meeting of the new board is scheduled for Friday.
Sexual predator laws are getting heightened attention this year following the death of a Salisbury girl around Christmas who police say was kidnapped by a sex offender.
