Judiciary Committee OKs Sotomayor For High Court

WASHINGTON – Pushing toward a historic Supreme Court confirmation vote, the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the first Hispanic justice, over nearly solid Republican opposition.

The panel's 13-6 vote for Sotomayor masked deep political divisions within GOP ranks about confirming President Barack Obama's first high court nominee. Just one Republican, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, joined Democrats to support her, although four others have said they'll vote for Sotomayor when her nomination comes before the full Senate next week — and that number is expected to grow.

"I would not have chosen her, but I understand why President Obama did. I gladly give her my vote, because I think she meets the qualifications test," Graham said. Obama's choice to nominate the first-ever Latina to the highest court is "a big deal," he added, declaring that, "America has changed for the better with her selection."

a great choice

Two things are certain. If you love her, she will disappoint you. If you hate her, she will surprise you.

It's just how it works. Liberal, conservative, all that's out the window with the exception of some justices who don't aspire to be remembered as "great legal minds". The rest of them do aspire to be remembered as great legal minds.

Even Scalia, who seems unconcerned about being remembered as anything other than a minion of the Vatican, gets it right now and then.

6:10, a great choice for a future filled with race relations problems, Sotomayor and Dr Gates are the problem-we need people to see people as people without colors and biases not more of these types of elitist idiots (notice I didn't refer to their race-I refered to their credentials).

She is a racist. Justice is suppose to be blind. The judge is suppose to interpret the law without being biased toward anyone no matter of race, color or creed.
The judge should come to the conclusion based on the law not the color of the defendant or plantiff. Big mistake voting her to the supreme court.

Everyone is racist, or lying. We all have our biases. Most of us choose to rise above them. Racism and discrimination are not the same thing.

Sotomayor ruled incorrectly in Ricci. The USSC made that clear. But her reasoning in Ricci wasn't her personal racism, it was based in precedents and her understanding of what the law permitted. She wasn't alone in that ruling, and she wasn't surrounded by minorities in it.

Her personal comments in public show that she isn't a politician, not that she's especially racist. God forbid someone here, almost anyone here, accidentally kill a black person (like a car wreck or something) and have every word you have ever spoken on the subject of black people available on video. Right?

You know and I know that we can say some pretty dreadful things at our own dinner table, or maybe at a party, but that doesn't mean that we make our business decisions based on race. Right?

DJH, I know people who repeat themselves over and over again, they're old and senile or drunk or both. Sotomayor thinks that her rhetorical flourish fell flat 7 times? Why did she keep using it? She is biased based on her record, she sides with children 100% of the time, then with the criminal 80% of the time unless they are accused of victimizing children. That's her record. She actually sees the world as black, white, and not by the law and is a very bad choice. I hope Dr. Cordero is legit and they stop this before we get another historic Supreme Court event, her being indicted, tried and un-seated for bankruptcy fraud.
