BREAKING NEWS! Large Artifact Found On Beach In Ocean City This Morning

There was a large artifact found on the beach of Ocean City and removed this morning. It appears to be a Keel from a ship of years past as noted by the
markings.

The Town is making arrangements with Federal Museum Officials for it to be studied. This keel is huge and very unstable. It was a slow process to remove it and preserve it.

A special thanks goes out to our roaming anonymous Contributor from Ocean City, you're getting it here first, as always.

What I'm amazed at is that if this was yesterday, and if high tide was in the middle of the day (not 9:30 ish am), that thing could have done some serious harm to swimmers.

I guess OC got lucky on the timing of that one!

I was at the beach yesterday and high tide was at 9 am and the waves were very choppy. Low tide was later in the day.

Nice find, I wonder where the rest of it is. Considering the affects of Hanna and Gustave I am sure we will see a lot of artifacts washing ashore. After all it is hurricane season.

I stated in the article that this was found this morningt, early this morning. No one was in harms way.

Oh, I should add. Ocean City was DEADE yesterday, so there probably wouldn't have been a problem had it come ashore yesterday anyway.

it looks to me to be part of the railroad that ran to o.c. and was destroyed in the 1933 huricane.
(o to o.c. life savingtation and their are some really cool videos of the storm and alot of o.c. history, really cool).

Federal officials? No, the State Underwater Archeologist was called in. And a danger to swimmers? Yes Joe, it was because it was likely bobbing around semi-submerged for longer that the night prior, Apparently some swimmers noticed it as they bumped into it in the surf. Heck it was also a navigational hazard for boaters. Could you imagine hitting that large chunk of wood at say 30 knots?

Anyway, there are a number of wrecks, some recorded and some unrecorded along this coastline, hence the numerous lifesaving stations and lighthouses that stand (and that have stood and that are now only archaeological sites) so washups of artifacts such as this and the discovery of like artifacts in dune blow outs are not totally uncommon! Its one of the pleasures of life on Delmarva!
