Everyone,
A lot has been going on in the last year in every aspect of Wicomico County living. Here at Salisbury News we have been trying for the sake of the Community to provide news and a viewpoint that you probably wont get anywhere else. Why? Because in our hearts at Salisbury News (I know a few people are saying yea right) we want the best for our community and without conflicting viewpoints things really would not get done or improve. Agree or disagree at least consider our underlying insights and arguments and not completely focus on grudges or petty politics.
As a community we do not need to be hitting the snooze button and eventually waking up when it is too late. It is imperative that we act properly and accordingly on correcting these problems which are starting to plague us; from Waste Water Treatment Plant spills, Gangs/Graffiti, and within City Government to name a few. I'm sure we can come up with scrolls of problems.
As much as it is necessary, and sadly to often it is the case on this site, we present the problems and negative issues to better inform everyone and try to ignite some public interest, outcries, and action.
The commitment toward excellence accomplishes way more than being complacent or in the stands. Excellence in our elected officials, each other, and programs are what makes community strive! When something is not right it is up to each of us to ask proper germane questions and expect an appropriate response from those who run our Community. If we do not receive an adequate response it is our right to demand one and if necessary make the proper changes through the Democratic process or any just legal remedy.
So I ask all of you to simply list a person, organization, or event which makes our Community better/what makes it unique in some way and leave a brief sentence of who/what it is in the comment section. These are the aspects of the Community that we kick mud on when we do not properly address problems. Think of all the community outreach members who mentor and work with kids who are susceptible our gang problem. We make their job so much harder not nipping gangs in the bud for good. We do no service to anyone!
Absolutely no bashing, profanity, or sarcasm on these responses. I would like this to be serious so as the comments grow all of us can read and be reminded of all of what is good in our Community; the recognition of the imperative to protect and preserve what is good within the Community.

I know that this will sound as though I'm sucking up, but the one aspect of life in Wicomico that has truly changed the way we see things is sbynews. This is the only place to find news and information that is genuine rather than "press release" or "spun". Like it or not, the sunlight sbynews shines is going to make our officials accountable, something that they haven't been for quite awhile.
I agree--Mr. Albero deserves noting as it has only been with his leadership in unexposing the City administrations many flaws that we citizens see exactly what is going on.
I've been enlightened by much that I have read in this blog. Unfortunately it frightens me for our community. I'd like for my children to settle here and my future grandchildren to call Salisbury home. I'd like to be a part of making a difference but don't know where to start. Other than griping, what action can we take to rebuild this once wonderful place that I've called home for many years? Any suggestions? I'm hopeful to be someone who makes a difference.
I know that this may sound silly, but the Pohanka Auto dealership has done alot for the community that no one may be aware of. They donate to charities monthly, have a golf tournament every year that gives back and they are a huge supporter of toys for toys, raising over 50k for one holidy season alone and year or two ago. I'm sure if you they could be more specific of you contacted them.
Barry King and Habitat for Humanity.
Jim Ireton is a tireless activist who works to make Salisbury a better place to live. And he is a dedicated teacher, as well.
Terry Cohen and Debbie Campbell - they ALWAYS do their homework and work tirelessly for this community - they may not be appreciated by 3 other council members and/or the city administration, but I believe they are appreciated by the majority of people in this town.
The Salisbury Police Department's officers on the street are underpaid, underappreciated, and overworked. They risk their lives every day in this dangerous town, and get treated badly for their efforts. I hope we give them what they deserve before they all go and find some respect elsewhere.
Mark Thompson at the Boys and Girls Club. He has done a tremendous amount of work with at risk kids in the community. He can't save them all but he works tirelessly making the effort.
Mine are Dr. Fran Kane and Dr. Harry Basehart who have tirelessly given their time to impartial unbiased teaching at SU, work through PACE, and scores of other public work.
Jim Ireton. This community doesn't have a better advocate.
The Salisbury Jaycees have been helping our community become a better place for as long as I can remember - going back 30+ years with things like the Christmas Parade Jaycee Park for Little League. A lot of what makes Salisbury a family friendly community seems to stem from their efforts.
The Dirty (quite a few) dozen for all of their efforts at making a better Salisbury.
To 8:42 - i know many people who work there and yes they do give A LOT to the charties...ask for the marketing dept and they can give you a run down, or contact Ed at Toys for Tots
To 9:53 - you are on the money...there are many officers who left for better conditions and better pay. Many of them close friends
To 10:32 - I don't know what Dr. Kane does outside of teaching at SU, but he was undoubtably the ONLY professor I had in my 4 years there that gave it all in each class with complete unbias and would never once teach you to think "his" way. He loved learning from you as much as he loved trying to teach you something. What a guy! A TRUE philosopher!
Wicomico Habitat for Humanity for the hope and homes thay are bringing to our community, The Recreation councils for Recreation & Parks and their tireless volunteer hours to support many sports, camps and programs, and the Salisbury Advisory COuncil on Youth Activities-they are a positive force in the Lake Street Area and put together fest activites for the community
Maslow's hierarchy my friends...you can't give awards to philosophers who may or not see noble truths of eventual self-actualization without giving a shout to the people who allow our most vulnerable the opportunity for food and shelter, and more importantly to break the cycle. Barry King has been mentioned, but The Joseph House fights in the really ugly trenches with some of our most displaced in the community.
Some have been mentioned, but here is my TOP TEN LIST:
1. Terry Cohen, who has worked harder in a little over a year on the Council than any 10 previous members!
2. Debbie Campbell, similar to Terry Cohen.
3. Joe Albero-need I say why?
4. Tim Spies, who still works to improve the city in spite of being "robbed" in the last election
5. Tim Chaney, always there as a friend and fighter for truth.
6. Jim Ireton, who is everything that's already been said as well as a wonderful human being.
7. Linda Kent and the others of the Fab Four who took on the developers.
8. Donna and others like her who have had to take so much from the mayor and Ms. Smith.
9. The rest of the original Dirty Dozen, and the hundreds of their supporters.
10. All those who worked so hard on the tax referendum last year. If you can do as well next year to get new GOOD people elected as mayor and to District 1 and to keep Debbie Campbell, then Salisbury will be on the road to recovery!
If you out there reading this agree, don't forget this next year!
Kelly O'Brien, Lee Steffy and John Grimsley of the Wicomico County Parks, Recreation & Tourism.
Bob Janeski of the Fruitland Recreation Commission.
These people work so hard to make Wicomico County a better place for ALL children.
