Letters in Mail for All Rising Third-Graders with Information on 2017-2018 Placement, Eligibility for Magnet Program

Letters were mailed Monday, June 12 to the parents and guardians of all rising third-graders in Wicomico County Public Schools. These letters include specific assessment data that were used as a part of the criteria for determining Magnet Program eligibility, and state whether the student is eligible to enroll in the Magnet Program for next school year.

Parents and guardians of students who have qualified for the Magnet Program must return their letter of intent in the self-addressed stamped envelope to Mrs. Bock by Friday, July 7. Please fill out and return this letter of intent stating whether or not the student will participate in the Magnet Program.

The annual Magnet Open House for students and parents is scheduled for Thursday, June 22 beginning at 6 p.m. at North Salisbury Elementary, 1213 Emerson Ave.

Parents and guardians of students who did not qualify for the Magnet Program and who wish to appeal must submit a letter of appeal to the attention of Mrs. Lori Bock, Supervisor of Accelerated Learning Programs, by Friday, July 7. The letter must explain in detail why the child should be placed in an advanced, fast-paced learning program. Please mail letters of appeal to Mrs. Lori Bock, Wicomico County Public Schools, PO Box 1538, Salisbury MD 21802. Magnet Program appeals will be scheduled for the week of July 10th.

Note: All rising fourth- and fifth-grade students not already part of the Magnet Program will be reevaluated for Magnet eligibility for the 2017-2018 school year. Letters inviting those students who now qualify will be sent home by the end of June. Only new invitees will receive letters.

Parents please appeal. Children who are close to qualifying should not be discounted. It definitely could impact their futures academically and behavior wise.

No! If your child didn't make the cut, they can't keep up. Please don't make the other children and teachers lower their expectations just because you feel you child is entitled to be magnet. Go to private school if you want the extra attention. But leave the magnet standards alone!
