What a magnificent letter...

With fourteen NFL games on Sunday, and the 49ers on that list, there's no question that some players will protest during the national anthem.
However, Marine Colonel (Ret) Jeffery A. Powers is sick of it, so he wrote a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Former Congressman Allen West posted the letter to his site:
Commissioner, I’ve been a season pass holder at Yankee Stadium, Yale Bowl and Giants Stadium.

I missed the ’90-’91 season because I was with a battalion of Marines in Desert Storm. 14 of my wonderful Marines returned home with the American Flag draped across their lifeless bodies. My last conversation with one of them, Sgt Garrett Mongrella, was about how our Giants were going to the Super Bowl. He never got to see it.
Many friends, Marines and Special Forces Soldiers who worked with or for me through the years returned home with the American Flag draped over their coffins.
Now I watch multi-millionaire athletes who never did anything in their lives but play a game, disrespect what brave Americans fought and died for. They are essentially spitting in the faces and on the graves of real men, men who have actually done something for this country beside playing with a ball and believing they’re something special! They’re not! My Marines and soldiers were!
You are complicit in this! You’ll fine players for large and small infractions but you lack the moral courage and respect for our nation and the fallen to put an immediate stop to this. Yes, I know, it’s their 1st Amendment right to behave in such a despicable manner.
What would happen if they came out and disrespected you or the refs publicly?
I observed a player getting a personal foul for twerking in the end zone after scoring. I guess that’s much worse than disrespecting the flag and our National Anthem.
Hmmm, isn’t it his 1st Amendment right to express himself like an idiot in the end zone?
Why is taunting not allowed yet taunting America is OK? You fine players for wearing 9-11 commemorative shoes yet you allow scum on the sidelines to sit, kneel or pump their pathetic fist in the air. They are so deprived with their multi-million dollar contracts for playing a freaking game!
You condone it all by your refusal to act. As such, you are just as bad and disgusting as they are. I hope Americans boycott any sponsor who supports that rabble you call the NFL. I hope they turn off the TV when any team that allowed this disrespect to occur, without consequence, on the sidelines. I applaud those who have not.
Legends and heroes do NOT wear shoulder pads. They wear body armor and carry rifles.
They make minimum wage and spend months and years away from their families. They don’t do it for an hour on Sunday. They do it 24/7 often with lead, not footballs, coming in their direction. They watch their brothers carted off in pieces not on a gurney to get their knee iced. They don’t even have ice! Many don’t have legs or arms.
Some wear blue and risk their lives daily on the streets of America . They wear fire helmets and go upstairs into the fire rather than down to safety. On 9-11, hundreds vanished. They are the heroes.
I hope that your high paid protesting pretty boys and you look in that mirror when you shave tomorrow and see what you really are, legends in your own minds. You need to hit the road and take those worms with you!
Time to change the channel.

Very well said. It's a shame everyone doesn't band together, and send this message.

Though I don't agree with their form of protest, not everyone disagrees. This is probably why people have yet to "band together" in order to send a message. I really feel like there is a point to the message, but Collin Kaepernick seems to be out of touch with reality. Besides the fact he was raised by white parents, he also supports "policies" of Fidel Castro. He talks about oppression in the United States, as if Castro did not run one of the most oppressive regimes in history. The irony is unbelievable. Also, Kaepernick admitted to not voting because he did not like either candidate that we had to chose from. I say all of this to state, we can all see that things are not equal in the United States, no one is denying that. No matter the factors involved. But to lead this type of protest you must be somewhat informed, and he seems to be out of touch with reality.

The NFL needs to grow some B---- and make the players that dis-respect anything for America and send them packing back to what ever country they LOVE and/or are from - I pray that President Elect Trump will demand RESPECT and punish those who dis-respect America. EVERYONE needs to Thank our Military, Law Enforcement and Emergency Personal

We are supposed to be free

Try to remember that.

For me, no NFL games, no NBA games, no "Entertainment Tonight", no "Modern Family", no "The View", etc. Life is great!

I've been sending the NFL players assoc an e-mail everyday since this crap started,"complimenting" them on the drop in ratings, the ongoing ignorance displayed by the players. I've yet to get any response from the players association or the San francisco 49ers

Team owners can stop the BS if they want to just bench the offending players and make sure the public and their fans know why.I think their real fans would support it even if they didn't win as many games. They would blame it on the players disrespecting our veterans our flag and our national anthem. Tell the fans if we don't win this game you can blame it on kappercrap and the rest of that sorry bunch.

The only way this behavior will stop will be when people stop paying to watch this nonsense. The only thing that speaks loud and clear to the NFL is money, and if revenue drops the result would be immediate. After all, it isn't like the average American can even afford to attend a game these days, what with the price of tickets and concessions. When TV ratings plunge, and attendance drops due to this type of behavior, then and only then will something be done by the NFL.

I for one have given up watching overpriced, pampered babies carry on like children - for me, making time for my family is much more beneficial to all of us.

Merry Christmas!

It's been 40 years since my military service, but I stood up and saluted that article.

I support the first amendment but the NFL is not the outlet to express it. To use the term loosely, fans and viewers are a "captive" audience and watch or tune in for the entertainment value, not political content. Personally I have not been to or watched a professional game in quite some time. I will faithfully watch college sports and day all day and frankly am somewhat saddened when these good kids are drafted and sell their souls to the big money machines.
