Last night I was watching WBOC and was blown away at what I was seeing. Being that I was at Monday night's City Council Meeting, knowing WBOC or WMDT wasn't there, how in the hell were they able to use the video footage as part of their broadcast?
Did they go to PAC 14 and ask for permission to use their footage. After all, it is us taxpayers who foot the bill for the majority of expenses for PAC 14. Does WBOC have an arrangement with PAC 14? Does WBOC make serious donations to PAC 14?
Here's what I can tell you. WBOC never once put in their broadcast while showing all of the footage from Monday night, "Courtesy of PAC 14". It seemed to me, it was a smack in the face of those financially supporting PAC 14 and here's why.
WBOC is a FOR PROFIT business. Now they can TIVO a public access television show and use whatever they like, while the rest of us are forced to go to the meetings and actually cover the event. WBOC sells commercials for their broadcasts, therefore they are absolutely making money off the taxpayers expense and quite frankly, (with all due respect) I feel this is absolutely out of line, especially when they blatantly refused to give credit to PAC 14.
I believe there are some ethics violations here and I'll have to look deeper into that. In the mean time, I'd like to know what you think about such practices.

To those of you claiming, (in damage control mode) that WBOC did give them credit, that's NOT true. I watched along with my Wife and they did not do so, period.
I'm not at all suggesting you go somewhere else. I'm simply stating I personally do not feel this is right at taxpayers expense.
Look, even if WBOC had given them credit, (WHICH THEY DID NOT) it's NOT right that they use footage as a FOR PROFIT business and use taxpayers money to retrieve footage.
Now stop sending in all the BS comments and start discussing the POINT of this article.
wboc is a typical liberal support media. They don't care how they get the news , it's obvious they don't have reporters that do the job.
As far as ethics , the MSM has taken the obama attitude. If he can get away with it , so can they.
They have no ethics or moral standards.

As long as they are paying PAC 14 a reasonable amount of money I don't have a problem with it.
I would equate it to plagerism. It wasn't their original material and they didn't cite where they got it from- taking Joe's word on this because I rarely watch local news. I don't know the FCC legalities but it would be the prudent thing at the minimum to include PAC 14 in their credits.
I wondered the same thing when I watched last night. There weren't many of us there Monday night and I was pretty sure wboc wasn't there. When I saw the coverage I knew in the back of my head something was wrong. By now I'm sure they covered their tracks but you are right Joe. They did not credit pac14.
What are we to do so sad.
I think you are spot on with this one Joe. They should be there just like everyone else or they don't get the story. If they are upset with you over this they should remember that it is our tax dollars footing the bill and it wasn't designed to be a service for local television. If they would like to cover each meeting and as a courtesy feed it to pac14 I'm sure they would love the idea and embrace it with open arms. They are a 501c3 non profit and wboc could write off the expense.

As a former employee I saw it as well and thought the exact same thing. I knew from the different angles they weren't covering it and waited to see if they would give credit to PAC14. As usual they did not.
They regularly pull this and actually get called out on it often. Management acts as if they can't be touched and no one has publicly exposed it. That is, until now.
After the grandma foxwell thing, good work Joe. They knew she was lying and let it fly anyway. I'm just sayin.

Her name was Roberta Weschler anonymous 2:58 pm. I did my best that day to stop her speech against Mr. Albero but she continued to point him out as the Monster of the easter shore. Management would not let me edit that part out because of the unused pre determined air time. She was needed to fill in that alloted time slot and I have always believed that WBOC took advantage of Mr. Albero because they see his blog as a very serious threat to their continued on air existance and financial income.
Don, you've always been a 1st rate reporter and I personally didn't have any problem with that interview at all. Hope all is well.

Don, that would explain why WBOC is calling ALL of our advertisers trying to get them to come over to WBOC for $99.00 a month. Fortunately our advertisers realize NO ONE goes to their Delbarfalist.com website. They use their home website numbers and not the numbers from that portion of their site to sell ads. It's a lose/lose investment. If you think about it, if you want to get news from WBOC you go to their television programs 5 times a day. People do not go to their website to get their news. Or should I say, very few do.
I can easily see why they are running scared. 2012 will be the biggest year ever for Salisbury News. You'll see.

I believe they do a really poor job covering the eastern shore of Maryland and Virginia. They don't travel to where the news is and if they report it, its from Long Wharf in Cambridge, probably because the reporter lives there. They call it the Delmarva report, but there is very little MarVa in their reporting. It's all Delaware all the time!!! Its like the whole western half of the Delmarva peninsula and Virginia don't even exist!

That broadcasting crew they have on their newscast is the phoniest bunch of pretentious actors & actresses.
The 1 of a few that I had any respect for was Don Elkins.
The only time my wife & I watch their newscast is after my wife & I drink a few beers and want a few laughs...ESPECIALLY when Alice Bavis & Brian Keane are "performing" their hilarious comedy acts.
For those looking for a few laughs after a few beers, I HIGHLY recommend you watch that phony "Comedy Duo." (LOL!!!)

That cheap station wouldn't renew my contract after telling me they would. They waited until my last day to let me go. Oh well, SU treats me better.
They got rid of me years ago because they said I didn't do enough reporting in Delaware. Said no one cared about Crisfield and duck callers. I miss wandering the Delmarvalous land for BOC.
I think you should start your own news station at least we would get real time news coverage and real news or buy wmdt since not a whole lot people watch them anyway Sbynews is in the quote " fair and balanced"

You will NEVER hear a word of news about Wico BOE unless the Wico BOE approves WBOC's report on it. There is soooooo much CRAP going down in the County right now, and not a WORD is uttered. WBOC should be ashamed to call themselves Journalists. They are mere Mouthpieces. WBOC, trust the people that we can see that you are beginning to Tout the Socialist/Liberal Rhetoric, and it is turning us off. We only watch to see your sports report on friday night about how WIHI stomped another team.

Just watch the commercials and notice how they sponsor, advertise, and otherwise promote almost every piss-ant event in DE. I thought they were a SALISBURY, MD station - after all, that's where it all began and without Salisbury they wouldn't even exist. Of course, the owner has major real estate holdings in DE so he wants to puff up Milton and any other place in DE where he owns land. Milton bureau? Puh-lease! Milton couldn't support a station on their own unless he bankrolled it, so I guess he uses WBOC to inflate the value of his real estate holdings.
Actually, news organization often share video with each other from within courtrooms, city council meetings, etc. to save money and manpower.
