Hispanic MDGOP Coalition Kickoff

October 10, 2011 | Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Republican Party will be re-launching their MDGOP Hispanic Coalition by hosting a kickoff event free to the public on October 21, 2011. The first Latino elected to the Maryland State Senate and current MD GOP Chairman, Alex (Alejandro) Mooney will address the Coalition.

"This is an opportunity for the Latino community to meet local leaders and party organizers over refreshments and shed light on their issues and work towards solving problems in their communities," stated Hispanic Coalition Chair Linda Hernandez. 2010 Census data will be presented as we discuss ways to expand the Republican Hispanic Coalition in Maryland. "We all know that Latino family values and work ethic are more in line with the Republican Platform, and we intend to illustrate that reality while building up the Coalition," concluded Hernandez.

About Alex (Alejandro) Mooney

Spanish and English-speaking Mooney's family hails from the country of Cuba, where his mother spent 7 weeks in jail for not supporting Fidel Castro's communist government. Alex has been a resident of Frederick since the age of one and in January of 1999 he became the youngest and only Hispanic member of the Maryland Senate. Senator Mooney received the Maryland Taxpayer of the Year Award in 2000 and the National Hero of the Taxpayer Award in 2003 for consistently voting to protect the "little guy" by cutting burdensome government regulations and red tape. He is married to Dr. Grace Mooney (née Gonzalez) who followed in her father"s footsteps, a surgeon in Cuba for 20 years before he moved his entire family to the United States.
