Rehoboth, DE- The Delaware State Police are currently searching for a Wilmington, DE man after he led them on a vehicle pursuit yesterday evening in Rehoboth and Dewey Beach, DE.

The incident began at approximately 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday, as a trooper on routine patrol in the area of Norwood Street in West Rehoboth, DE, observed a white Honda Accord traveling in front of him. A routine registration check of the Honda revealed that the owner’s operator’s license was currently revoked. The trooper then conducted a vehicle stop of the Honda in the area of Church Street and came into contact with the driver. The driver, who was not in possession of a driver’s license or a valid insurance card, provided the trooper with what turned out to be a fictitious name and date of birth. After running the information provided to him and discovering that the driver had misled him, the trooper returned to the Honda at which time the driver fled. The trooper then returned to his patrol vehicle and began pursuing the Honda along Coastal Highway as well as several streets in the Dewey Beach, DE area. The pursuit, which had now been joined by officers from numerous police agencies, ended when the Honda traveled through a fence in the Tides development in Dewey Beach and collided with a trash dumpster. The operator of the vehicle then fled on foot and escaped apprehension.

Troopers were later able to identify the operator of the Honda as Robert J. Murdy, 32, of Wilmington, DE.  He is described as a white male, 6’00” tall and 250 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Murdy is also wanted by the Delaware State Police after he was identified as a suspect in an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle complaint which had been investigated at approximately 4:00 p.m. Tuesday in Harbeson, DE. The investigation into the incident revealed that Murdy had taken the Honda Accord that he had been driving during the vehicle pursuit from a 41 year old Georgetown, DE man without his permission.

The Delaware State Police are asking anyone who may know the location of Robert J. Murdy to contact Troop 7 at 302-644-5020 or Troop 4 at 302-856-5850. Citizens may also provide a tip by texting keyword “DSP” plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).  Tipsters may also provide information through lines maintained by Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333. Callers can also submit information via the internet at www.tipsubmit.com.

Ok im not on the side of the guy that ran from the cops. But what exactly is a routine registration check and why is simply ok for a cop to run a tag when the operator of a car hasnt made any violations.

again just a question not something to start a war on here

two words-"probable cause". I'm sure subject to a degree of interpretation on the part of the trooper. Maybe the trooper ran his plates just for the heck of it. Hard to say.

Tag information is public record. Police do not need any reason to randomly run a tag.

some cops have cameras mounted on the trunk of their cars that routinely scan every vehcile's license plate as it drives by them any hits show up immediately it's up to the cop to decide what to do then. pull them over or keep going.
