Come August 28, teachers and students in Missouri can no longer be friends — on Facebook.
With a new law, Missouri has became the first in the nation to prohibit social networking between students and teachers.
When Missouri Senate Bill 54, which was signed by the governor last week, takes effect later this month, teachers and students will no longer be able to connect on any site (not just Facebook) that allows for private communication.

I'm a Community Volunteer in the Worcester County School District. I'm aware of a few teachers that "friend" students, but most don't and I support that. I don't either.
I do enjoy seeing some of the students in public when we run into each other, but, otherwise do not engage them other than in the classroom.
Just today I ran into a student in the grocery store and enjoyed the "Hi, how's your summer" kinda thing. But that's where it ends.
Most of them are great youngsters and I enjoy being part of their education. I really do! But there has to be a line that's not to be crossed.

So? And you're a retired cop. So?
It's good that you are active in the community like that.
I don't know what you volunteer to do in such schools.
This will not stand. The courts will overturn it within six months. They can not govern who you can be friends with. I think that these types of relationships are inappropriate but you can not govern it. What if a teacher and her family are life long friends with a family that has their children go to the teachers school. STUPID LAW
1:19, why are you attacking 10:24, whose comment I thought very well-reasoned? As far as volunteering in school, there are many things one can do; why not try it yourself? As a retired teacher, I certainly agree that there is a line not to be crossed, even with a volunteer. When that line is crossed, undesirable things can happen. I am now a FB friend with many former students, but even now, after being away from teaching for a good many years, I don't initiate the "Request to be a FB friend." I have seen too many instances when a student/teacher relationship becomes a bit too chummy.

I wasn't aware I was attacking him. Maybe I was a little too blunt. But if I did I apologize to him, you and anyone else I offended. There is enough of that sort of thing without me contributing to it.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Really? I disagree. And if you're a retired teacher, I hope you taught shop and not english.
12:16, Actually it was English (Remember to capitilize that word). Please point out any grammatical errors I made, just as I did all the years I taught English. I would be grateful.
12:16,I didn't see anything wrong with that retired teacher's post. And what are implying about shop teachers?
lol oh lord
