Last October, Walmart announced a pledge to double the amount of produce it purchases from local growers by 2015, with the three-pronged goal of saving on fuel costs, reducing spoilage and catering to a growing consumer appetite for local produce. But while Walmart defines "local" as grown and sold in the same state, your grocery store might have a different definition for the term.

You need to include produce stand as well!
I stopped at a LOCAL produce stand on route 50 some time ago...I ask for a certain item I was told they had to make a trip to Harris Market. I assumed road side markets were items the farmers grew on their property to sell LOCAL. I guess I assumed wrong.
We do buy LOCAL, eat LOCAL and shop LOCAL when at all possible.
Acme in Easton is selling "local" New Jersey tomatoes.
One thing that I have noticed about farmers markets - a lot of times you'll see the same commercial tomato box in the farmer's trucks. Turns out, they all supplement their produce with purchases in places like Jessup. They don't even know where their produce comes from at that point. So you might not be buying local at all!
