Federal Workers Fret Over Debt Limit Talks

As the president and the speaker of the house intensified their debate over raising the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling Monday night, the real world impact was reflected among Maryland federal workers like Jacqueline Hamilton. After 44 years of working for the Social Security Administration, Hamilton is understandably concerned about cuts that may be coming to the federal work force.

But she's also worried about senior citizens and the disabled who rely on Social Security to make ends meet. If her position is eliminated, or portions of the government shut down because money runs out, she said it's not clear whether those checks will be delivered.

"I'm just concerned about people who have no other income," said the 62-year-old Baltimore resident, who is also an official with the American Federation of Government Employees. "If they can't reach me then ... benefits can't be paid."

I wouldn't be to concerned if I were her.

The last time the debt ceiling expired - (Clinton Admin) - she got paid for not working.

That's right folks - you heard it and the information is accurate. I vividly remember because I was tasked to do some - if not all - of the federal workers duties - and when they returned they were issued backpay for the time they were furloughed.

Personally - I hope the federal government defaults. It will help to correct some of the imbalances that have existed for a very long time. In the long run - it is the solution to cleaning-up our house.

If we didn't have those in Washington protecting the big boys, we'd already have an agreement.
I'm tired of the middle class and the elderly being the only ones hit when hits need to be made.
My 87 year old mother in law cannot afford a cut to her social security! She worked all her life and paid into the system. She is fortunate to have a pension as well but between the two, she makes ends meet.
Over the last few years, due to the rising costs of goods and taxes, she's had to go into her savings to make those ends meet.
This woman doesn't go anywhere and spend money. We're lucky to even get her out of her house!
This is just one case, there are MANY more just like her but there are those in Washington who could care less! They're rather her die so that she doesn't collect social security anymore than to raise taxes on the rich and big corporations or to go after big oil.
Those people do NOT represent WE THE PEOPLE! They ONLY represent their buddies!
