WBOC Falls Flat On Local Reporting

While WBOC has weathered criticism that it’s too “Delaware-centric” in its coverage, last evening’s story of a “possible” Longhorn Steakhouse coming to Salisbury showed that maybe WBOC needs to keep their coverage north of the Mason-Dixon line.  If this was an example of covering the Maryland portion of DelMarVa, Marylanders clearly need to look elsewhere – like Salisbury News – for their Eastern Shore news.

From the WBOC story:

Chain restaurant or locally-owned business? Longhorn Texas is surveying a site by the Centre at Salisbury Mall for a possible franchise opening.

City officials tell WBOC they approved the preliminary permit along Route 13 about a month-and-a-half ago but the company declined to provide additional details ...

Surveying a site for a possible franchise opening?  Do they have any idea how much money has been spent on that property already for a “possible franchise”?

Over a MONTH ago, Salisbury News published a detailed post as to what was going on at the site and why.  We interviewed several city and county officials to find out why the city and state were allowing a storm water management pond to be reduced in size to accommodate Longhorn.  We even detailed what was being done to mitigate a high water table.

Yet, a month after the fact, the best that WBOC could do was an overpriced helicopter flyover and a quote from a boilerplate company statement?  C’mon guys!  If you had bothered to use Google, you could have found our story and even plans for the project.

The fancy studio is nice (although hardly worth its own 24 / 7 streamcast).  The helicopter is cool (sorta).  However, it seems that the folks over at Draper Holding need to fess up – WBOC has abdicated its claim as “Delmarva’s News Leader”.

If you base the title of news leader on viewers, I dare say they hold on to the lead over your blog readers. Don't focus on who is the leader and just do what you do, do it well and stop worrying about WBOC ( and the Times as well.)

anonymous 9:08. I beg to differ.

I have been doing this for many years now and quite frankly there's only a certain amount of people that use the Internet for their main source for news.

On a local level, I'm confident we exceed the amount of Internet viewers than ANY other source out there on the shore.

Most do not go to WBOC, WMDT and the DT's for their news. Not ON LINE anyway.

If you want to calculate hits from around the US, well, they might have me beat, for now. However, when Salisbury News sells an ad to a LOCAL company, they will more than likely get the biggest viewing audience THEY want to reach here instead. The smart companies know that.

On top of that, our ads are MUCH less expensive. Read the Post again. We did this article a month ago.

We don't interview Asian people who cannot speak english and say we had to hire an someone to tell you what they had actually said. I mean, come on now. They could have gone to the Mall and asked 500 people to respond to their question, do you prefer box chain restaurants or locally owned? HELLO!

GA's Post is spot on. Salisbury News has delivered 10 times per day more information on a daily basis than ANY one of the MSM outlets.

Just remember, when some company is spending thousands of dollars for advertising, YOU ultimately pay for it in the end. We have been providing less expensive ads to HELP the local economy. We provide a FREE service and we are NOT controlled by special interests.

When WE see a really good article on WBOC, we not only link to it, we use their logo and give them full credit. WBOC refuses to recognize our work in any way, shape or form and will always JUMP at the opportunity to produce pieces about me, (or should I say against me) every opportunity they get.

We feel they should be just as accountable as they try to make us. You know, like the interview they did recently with Fernando Guerrero, stating some Blogs out there are saying your carreer is now over. A professional would have stated what Blog it was, because it certainly wasn't Salisbury News. It was probably a Blog out of California. Yet they wanted to imply it was us.

Let's not forget Granny. All hot air and nothing to back ANYTHING she claimed. The list goes on and on.

Last night's piece was horrible and they made it their main featured story.

If they want to continue doing such things and fail to do ANY investigative reporting, well, so be it. They made no real attempt to do so and in the end we will continue to be Delmarva's News Leader.

The Dew Tour had the largest crowd ever!! It was posted almost everyday on SBYnews! That is how I knew about it, Thanks!

Joe, we count on you for the news. Don't even bother to tune in to the local tv stations anymore. I watched last night hoping to find out about a fire at Ray's Shanty near Chincoteague yesterday, and can't find anything anywhere. I know it isn't the tri-county area, but lots of folks from the tri-county area go there for wonderful steamed shrimp and great flounder sandwiches.

anonymous 11:28, that's unfortunate. No one contacted us about that fire.

anonymous 11:08, you make a great point.

One story I didn't see on WBOC that I see on SBYNews as linked from CapeGazette is about the Cannery Village issue... oh wait, that's cause Draper owns it wouldn't want to look bad.

Meanwhile any other night it's all about Milton. Anytime Dogfishhead barfs out another press release (free ad) to WBOC it's all over the news, cause Draper's son in law owns it. Alot of conflict of interest there.

The one thing I really don't like is this new Outdoors Delmarva. You can't replace Scorchy Tawes but if you are going to do an outdoors report at least get a real man to do it not a guy wearing khaki's and loafers. It also seem like they spend more time in Kent and Talbot then Somerset and Dorchester.

And what's with WBOC doing voice overs of other stories from around the nation as if they've done the actual story and reporting
