Chase Those Hiccups Away

Holding your breath, gulping water and getting scared are the traditional ways to eradicate the hiccup menace, but those tend to be hit and miss. Just when you think you've managed to stop hiccups, on comes the next round.

The Awl checks in with alternative home remedies. A sampling:

*Trigger your gag reflex with a tongue depressor.

*Place some sugar or a lemon wedge on the back of your tongue.

*Breathe into a paper bag.

*Just give up and wait the hiccups out.

I've found that forcing myself to yawn gets rid of my hiccups. How do you get rid of yours?

Age old mommy trick...take a small glass of water, light a match, quickly dip match in the water and then drink the water. The sulfer from the match (I don't know why)works EVERY time!

Take a spoonfull of sugar, soak it with soy sauce (or worcestershire sauce,) then add hot sauce.

Drink it down fast.

Hiccups gone.

Drink water from the wrong sided of the glass.."upside down" if you will. Guarantee it works if you do it right.

i just hold my breath. kinda force the breath down like you are pushing a fart out too( not quite the same, but close). sounds weird, but it works. 2 hiccups max after you first start holding your breath.
