im very upset that they would remove the pledge from the agenda. many people have fought and died for that flag and it should be respected. if you dont respect the flag then you dont respect the country. shame on you. thanks sjd

They should have simply moved the prayer before the "Call to Order." Then it is not "on the agenda," and the question of a "legally sanctioned prayer" is nullified.

Those who do not want to participate in the prayer can sit respectfully,or if they are uncomfortable, they may wait in the hall.

The honor could be rotated among clergy of different traditions each month. That's how you build a community instead of dividing it.

NO!! NO!! NO!!

Those whose not to participate need to CLOSE THEIR EARS!!!!! Stop using our currency and find another country to live in!!!!

According to this morning's Daily Times, the Lord's Prayer will be replaced by the prayer recited by a guest clergyman, and the Pledge will still be done. I think this is a workable solution. I can see the problem with the Lord's Prayer, since not everyone, including a Council member, is Christian; howver, since we all are Americans, the pledge should certainly stay.

No. Another example of the minority dictating to the majority. I GUARANTEE that if the removal of the prayer and the pledge were put on a referendum, they would not pass. But a council member gets to push their personal agenda down the throats of their constituents, because, well, they now know whats best for us. We barely survived before without their wise and benevolent guidance.

No - but then again why bother to be concerned, they're going to do whatever they want without regard to propriety, the wish of the citizens, or the welfare of what had been a good city.

You mean us citizens actually have a say in what happens witht he council? Wait...nope thats just a poll on oour local news site. Guess it doesn't really matter what the public thinks any more.

Ya know, all I hear from everyone who doesn't live in Salisbury is "Thank God!" This is just another reason I tend to agree with them. Not only is it a slap in the face to the service men & women who made it possible for these ya-whoos to even have a job, but they have no problem praying to God when things are bad or they need something.

Anon 11:45 way to think outside the box!! Have you ever considered running for office?

We need change (for the better) and bad. GOD HELP US!!!

Our leaders have forgotten what this country is all about and why we became a great nation. That is our belief in God, and his protection and what he provides. I would not like to be with this group when God asked why you turned your back on me. The pledge, you should not hold any office in the United States if you can not honor the pledge. What have you done, but dammed us.

Anonymous said...

No, those who choose not to participate or recite either could simply stand respectfully and quietly or as stated earlier, these items could have been done outside the formal agenda. I must say that this council seems to have an air of total disregard for the concerns of its constiuents, on this and a few other issues.

I'll pray for them

From what I read in today's Daily Times the Council came up with a doable solution. Not sure why some are making a big stink over the situation, unless they do not know the whole story.

This country was founded on Christian beliefs and if you don't want to be part of that you should not come to live in a country that was founded on Christian beliefs. And we won't mind if you leave either!!

The removal of the prayer and the POA is so Berkeley 1972.

Losers!!

heck no I think we need T-shirts with the pledge on the front & the Lords prayer on the back to wear at City functions. In case of nuclear or terror attack the ban on prayer will be lifted.

Our City Sucks these days

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm confused here. Are they still doing the pledge before the meeting or not? And if so, what's the problem?

Drew said...

1:42 Not true, and saying it over and over does not make it so.

I think the council avoided a future lawsuit launched by some anti-prayer nutjob. Putting outside the business of the council (the legislation) is contentious but it's probably prudent.

And yes, the Pledge will be before each meeting.

Joseph Albero said...

anonymous 3:08, WHAT LAWSUIT?????

There is NO lawsuit, nor would there be. Just a select few politicians brainwashing your mind and fearmongering you into believing the possibility.

Mind you, do YOU have ANY clue what it cost to sue someone. Bring on the lawsuit and THEN we'll see what happens from there.

Until then, it's all BS.

anonymous 2:54, nice to see the Council or Mayor visiting AND commenting on Salisbury News.

Anonymous said...

No just the Counsel and Mayor.

Anonymous said...

11:45, 12:59, that is what the council did.

Just goes to show what unrest a wrong headline or a wrong survey question can do.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the 4 council members that voted for this should be removed from the Salisbury City Council.

Anonymous said...

No. This is what is wrong with our country today, leaders who were raised to respect God, respect the religious freedom, and honor our country. So, have they lost all respect of the values they were raised around or didn't their parents raise them with the right values? Just one more sign that our world is coming to an end. People try so hard every day to take GOD out of this world, well when you take GOD out you let Satan in, and right now he's dancing all over Salisbury.

We keep bowing to those who want to remove this and want to remove that because it offends their sensibilities. What about my sensibilities that demand that those things be a part of the way things are done.
