GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ANNOUNCES TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS TO THE HARFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the appointment of James D. Thornton and Ronald G. Browning to the Board of Education for Harford County.  The appointments are to four year terms beginning July 1, 2011.

“I am proud to appoint Mr. Thornton and Mr. Browning to the Harford County Board of Education,” said Governor O’Malley.  “They each bring a diverse background of experience and expertise and I am confident  they possess the skill and the leadership necessary to ensure every child in Harford County receives the quality public education they deserve.”

James D. Thornton – Mr. Thornton is a 22-year resident of Harford County with 35 years of corporate experience in two Fortune 500 businesses. Mr. Thornton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Talladega College in Alabama.   In 2005, his alma mater recognized him with the National Alumni Amistad Award.  Mr. Thornton is a member and Treasurer of the Baltimore Museum of Art Board of Directors.  He is currently a  principal with the Thornwood Real Estate Group, LCC.  Mr. Thornton, a resident of Bel Air, is being appointed to an at-large seat. 

Ronald G. Browning – Mr. Browning is a life-long resident of Maryland with experience in education and business.  A retired teacher, he presently owns and operates a bed and breakfast in Havre de Grace.  He is also an adjunct faculty member at Baltimore County Community College and a newspaper columnist.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies and History from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a second Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Geography from Towson University.   Mr. Browning also serves as the chair of the Havre de Grace Historical Preservation Commission.  Mr. Browning, a resident of Havre de Grace,  is being appointed to a District F seat.
